Here’s why it matters in free agency.

Currently the Wolves have 10 players under contract next year for about $48.75 mil. Because of cap holds, this leave about $8 mil to make a free agent offer with. Suppose they really want to make a splash and sign someone like Eric Gordon to an offer sheet [not saying he's the guy we want, but if]. This is not enough.

Now if you amnesty Darko, you can offer a FA a deal starting at up to $13.2. This is a big difference.

as others have said, we can only amnesty contracts singed BEFORE the new CBA. Here are the Wolves players playing next year under contracts signed before the new CBA. I’d be interested in who you’d like to amnesty

Pek – 1 more year – $4.8 mil
Wes Johnson – 1 more year – $4.3 mil – (following year is team option)
Ridnour – 2 more years – $4.0 then $4.3 mil
Ellington – 1 more year – $2.1 mil – (following year is team option)
Darko – 1 more year – $5.2 mil – – (following can be bought out at $1 mil)

The amnesty clause only applies to players that were already under salary with a team before the new CBA was signed. Most of our players are subject to team options if we wish to extend or terminate their contracts. The only use for the amnesty would be either Ridnour or Darko. Ridnour actually contributes to the team. Darko is really the only option or else the amnesty goes to waste.

The thing about Darko is that he’s the Wolves’ only real defensive-minded big man. He’s put up some good performances (harrassing Blake and Marc Gasol/ZBo on defense), so it doesn’t really make sense for the Wolves to cut him if they’re still getting decent performances from time to time.

It seems pretty dumb to me to use the amnesty clause on him. It is a one time deal in the life of the CBA. If they amnesty him, they can’t do it again. After this season, he has 1 year at 5.4 left on the deal (not much above the mid-level exception), then you can buy him out for just over a mil. It seems, at best, short sighted to use a one time advantage on something that will not really do anything buy save the team some cash, won’t make them better on the floor (he’s not makinglenough to bring back a difference making FA, and Minny isn’t exactly the place people give discounts to go).
