D'Antoni got the Knicks firing on all cylinders while Melo was out. What changed? Melo came back, and now there are two starters that don't like to play defense.
I've said this before, and I wish certain GMs could get it in their head.

At the end of the day, regarding players who can't bring anything to the table besides scoring: they better be efficient. It doesn't matter how skilled you are.

Guys like Monta Ellis, Jamal Crawford, and above all, Carmelo Anthony...they're best suited for being the sixth man off the bench for any legit playoff teams (like a Jason Terry or James Harden role).
Even if you can put up 25pts/game, if you can't do it efficiently and are a huge liability on defense (and can't pass, rebound, set good screens, etc.), your 25 points are really worth like 10 - 15.

I'd take someone like Andre Iguadala over Carmelo Anthony any day of the week. Andre's defense and vision are easily worth the 7 - 8 points per game that Carmelo gives you over Andre.

D'Antoni is not one of the best coaches in the NBA but he is in the 2nd tier. He is a great offensive coach but defensively, he is deplorable. However, look what he has to work with -- Stoudamire and Melo are horrible defensive players. This team didn't have a point guard (yeah, Baron Davis is the answer, that's a joke) until Lin came in and then what happened? They started winning ballgames because Lin bought into D'Antoni's schemes (movement without the basketball) and Melo wasn't there to stagnate the offense. Melo kills a movement offense because he wants to isolate and go one-on-one. Melo could have done well in this offense but he would have had to humble himself -- that's never going to happen.

The Knicks aren't going to get better by getting rid of D'Antoni -- I told my son that Melo will never lead his team to a championship because he always wants the ball in his hands and he doesn't want to share but this is the bottom line -- he doesn't play defense and defense, not offense, wins championships (and ballgames). Amare is also a defensive liability so it leaves the Knicks pretty much dead when your top stars don't care about defense.

There is hope -- I hear that the Knicks are trying to get Phil Jackson to come out of retirement. Phil is probably the only coach who can save these Knicks but I'm not sure that Melo and Amare have the intellect, patience or discipline to learn and implement the triangle offense. I also heard that Sloan is willing to coach the Knicks -- wow, could you imagine a "no-nonsense" coach like Sloan with Melo and Amare -- that sure would be worth the price of admission.

There is no doubt that Melo is a talent. However, comparing him to Kobe is a gross overstatement. Having a Power Forward who constantly needs the ball, slows down play is much more difficult than a player like Kobe who needs the ball, but because of his position, Off Guard, SF, means he also has the skills and ability to distribute the ball. Something Melo is not good at, at least in any consistent sense. Kobe often has at least 6 assists a game, if he struggles, at least he gets other involved. Melo needs to change his game. This Knicks team could be awesome! They have talent in the form of legit superstars but also very eager role players who have shown just what it takes to win games. Something they showed during the absence of Melo & Amare. Hopefully, this new decision will unite them into being the ball club they deserve to be.

Talk about delusional. Everyone saw a rift between D'Antoni, who coaches a pass first offense, and Melo, a me first player. Don't think you're anything special or have some great observational skills.

So Melo ALMOST got George Karl to quit/axed and definitely got D'Antoni to quit. What a scumbag, me-first player.

Considering the performance of Knicks during and then after Melo's missed games, you'd think the Knicks would have gotten a clue about the real problem (fat boy Carmelo).

holy cow...can't believe i'm actually agreeing with dirtybird. the cavs did get players, who were THOUGHT to be valuable compliment pieces, around LeBron. i remember people were very happy when they got hughes, jamison, williams, shaq, etc...they had the best record for 2 years in a row...so i don't but into that LeBron did it by himself. they were a great team...just not the best/hottest in the playoffs.
