Blake is a decent 2nd unit pg, but from the outside looking in, it doesnt look like he fit in with the veterans chemistry wise.

@bebopa he could be more or a point guard but he has not proven to date to be better than either Blake or Fisher. Blake plays D, is steady does not make a lot of errors nor does he require plays be run for him, while having a decent shot from range. D Fish is proven, he is slower but still a good player. The worst Fish could do is be a bench player and tutor any new/younger guys coming in. If were a really good point, Felton he would already be gone to someone. Who does not need a really good point?

i think Felton would be a good fit in LA. He is more of point guard than Blake or Fisher.

If Felton can play with the likes of Kobe, Pau, and Bynum I’m willing to go out on a limb and predict he will return to the solid PG he was prior to this season. He could be the missing piece to the LAKERS winning it all again.

Blake started >230 games at PG for McMillan with the Blazers. I’m sure they know what they are getting, and he’s actually cheaper than his last 2.5 years with them. Pretty sure they always saw him as a non-ideal starter but a nice backup who could handle the job if they couldn’t upgrade.

Multiple times. Drafted by Wizards, dropped him after 2 seasons. Signed w/ Port as a FA, traded away to Mil after 1 season. Traded again to Den during season. Signed w/ Port as a FA again next season, traded again to LAC after 2.5 seasons. Signed w/Lakers. He seems to play better after mid-season trades, also.

On talent, the trade is surely a win for the Lakers, but let’s look at the salary cap/luxury tax angle:

Felton 2011-2012 salary – $7.56 mil

Blake 2011-2012 salary – $4 mil

If the trade occurs about halfway through the year, each team ends up paying about half the salaries of each player. For the Lakers it works out to $5.78 mil for a half season of Blake and a half season of Felton, a bump of $1.78 mill. The luxury tax doubles the difference, so we end up at a cost of $3.56 for this year for the Lakers to make this trade.

However, Blake is owed $8 mil over the next 2 years , and if LA is not sold on him, dumping the contract might be desirable. Felton’s contract is up after this year. When you factor this in, the trade looks like a no-brainer for the Lakers. Although it won’t make a hugs difference on how far the will go in the playoffs, it gives them a little more wiggle room for the next two seasons.

For the Blazers, this makes no sense unless they are sold on Blake being at least a decent 3rd guard of the bench for their team, otherwise committing this money is misguided.

Conclusion: The Lakers will have to include more, which they might not want to do, leading them to turn to a cheaper option such as Ramon Sessions.

@ chargerdillon : if you think that Felton won’t be a factor against the top contending teams then that tells me that you don’t watch basketball .. He’s a better mid-rage shooter, floor leader, defender etc than any point guard that the Lakers have. He’s a scoring threat. Felton gives the Lakers fits, as does any other PG … If the Lakers can get a PG like Felton, it will create problems for opposing teams, as they can no longer double Kobe.
In fact, the Lakers will now have a PG that can penetrate and create for kobe,Bynum and Gasol

Honestly I wouldn’t even call it a lateral move, I’d rather have a Steve Blake who ALWAYS wants to play at his best regardless of where he is or what his role is vs. a Felton who at his last two stops does nothing but pout at the first chance, that’s just me though…
