Report: Pierce, Allen drawing more trade interest than Rondo

All the buzz today on your television and sports talk radio has been the idea that the Boston Celtics are ready to move Rajon Rondo. And they are — GM Danny Ainge isn’t “shopping” Rondo in the sense he is not calling around desperately trying to trade Rondo for a couple role players, the Celtics are happy to keep him. But if you call up and blow the Celtics away with an offer, you can get Rondo.

But when people are calling up, they are not asking for Rondo, reports A. Sherrod Blakely at CSNNE.com.

With the trading deadline two weeks away, multiple league sources indicate that Paul Pierce and Ray Allen — not Rajon Rondo — are drawing the most interest from potential trade partners…

Among the teams interested in them are the Clippers, who since Billups went down could use a veteran wing.

Why those two and not Rondo around the league? Fit and shorter contracts, the same things that drive most trades.

Allen has a skillset — the ability to shoot the ball — that fits in with any team. And with a $10 million expiring contract, there are a number of teams that could benefit from adding the NBA’s all-time 3-point shooting king. Among those believed to have some interest in Allen, are the Los Angeles Clippers. With the season-ending injury to Chauncey Billups, the Clippers have a huge void to fill at the shooting guard position.

As for Pierce, he still has two years remaining on his contract after this season (the final year is partially guaranteed), but he’s still one of the better one-on-one scorers in the NBA. Adding a player like Pierce, either as a starter or coming off the bench, could provide some much-needed depth to a title contender or a playoff team looking to improve their standing. Some of the teams believed to have interest in Pierce include both of his hometown teams — the Los Angeles Lakers and the Clippers — as well as the Houston Rockets.

It feels more and more like Ainge and the Celtics are going to make a big move, but that move may be more likely to be one of the “big three” than Rondo. That is, unless they can get someone to take on Jermaine O’Neal’s deal.

I only became a Celtics Fan because of Ray Allen, other then Flo and his family i am the #BiggestRayAllen fan, I hate to see him leave the celtics, however if he leaves them for LA Clippers or Chicago Bulls or even OKC i can live with that, atleast he will get another ring. As long as he dont end up on LA Lakers or Miami Heat!!

    #ThisCelticsFanMayBCrossingOver

DannyAinge Sucks, Gosh that K.Perkins trade gone haunt Celtics fans forever, he might not been a scorer but, never under estimate the chemistry those 5 guys had together!

come to MIlwaukee Wisconsin and find me and say that!

      • zeedoubleyou - Mar 1, 2012 at 5:52 PM

I live in Milwaukee…you sound stupid.

There might be a banner hanging in the Bradley Center if Ray had played a little more D when he was in MKE and you wouldn’t have to jump teams every couple years.

      • mikeewright7 - Mar 1, 2012 at 6:04 PM

so i sound stupid for what exactly? not wanting my favorite player to leave the celtics or because idw him on Miami or LA??? or is it becuase i said im a huge Ray Allen fan,

@zeedoubleyou idk why ur in the conversation, you wanna talk about banners? check the tape of 2001 Milwaukee vs Sixers game 5 or 6 I believe they would have advanced to the finals against LA if glen robinson didnt miss the game winning shoot, that would of been a banner there, just curious what part of milwauke u live in?

If i wanna jump teams then i will, im sure there are 0 cavs fans when Lebron left,

    • andyhr17 - Mar 1, 2012 at 8:20 PM

I think he’s referring more to your lack of a grasp of the English language than your content when he says you sound like an idiot.

        oh, got cha!

    • rwj137 - Mar 2, 2012 at 12:06 PM

Most of you are idiots!!! First off KG is having an awesome year!! Look at his numbers for the year! As far as Ray, Ray is a choke look at game 7 against the Lakers 2 for 17 I’ll never forgive him or Doc for not pulling him. Rondo is not a winner. He is a mopey little baby. Big Baby was one of his best friends what does that tell you. This kid Avery Bradley within 1 year is going to be better then Rondo and Etwan Moore has a serious upside. Pierce is the total package great guy great player if Ainge trades him AWWWW.. Look trade Ray and Rondo for a big man dare I say it Gasol. Or a serious re bounder and the Celtics could win it all this year. They have potentially the best bench out there. Look I have been watching the Celtics for 40 years (I’m 50) With a serious re bounder this team could be the real deal

    • rwj137 - Mar 2, 2012 at 12:12 PM

Ray is a choke!! Ray turns the ball over like crazy! Ray does not play defense!

  2. phx1311 - Mar 1, 2012 at 4:29 PM

not a Celtic fan but i would feel sorry for Pierce since he has played there his entire career.

  3. goforthanddie - Mar 1, 2012 at 4:34 PM

I wouldn’t consider moving Rondo til after the geezers are gone, he’s the only one left worth keeping.

  4. mikeewright7 - Mar 1, 2012 at 4:37 PM

Yea it sucks for Paul.P he could and should retire in Boston thats all he know is CelticsPride, he could be the Celtics all-time scorer if he stay another 2-3 years! This Hurts as a Celtics fan

  5. redbullenergydrink - Mar 1, 2012 at 4:47 PM

And no one’s interested in Garnett? (serious question by the way)

    • theonlysaneblazerfan - Mar 1, 2012 at 7:57 PM

People will be interested in signing Garnett next year as a free agent. I can’t imagine anyone trading for him now when he’s making $20+ million this year and barely performing better than a midlevel exception guy.

    • andyhr17 - Mar 2, 2012 at 8:04 AM

Garnett is definitely a guy who could go to a team and help them win a championship (not leading the way on the court as a scorer/rebounder…more of his veteran presence and his influence on a team’s defense). His contract is untradeable though.

  6. sportsinhd - Mar 1, 2012 at 4:49 PM

The idea that they’d trade Rondo still baffles me. It’s been brought up that Rondo doesn’t get along with Doc Rivers, but who cares? No one expects Rivers to be there long term anyways.

It would be especially sad to see Pierce go, almost as bad as seeing Bird in a different uniform, but that’s the business. If you can get some first rounders for Pierce and Allen the rebuilding will go quickly. If it’s nothing but role players why bother? The cap space will open up soon enough whether or not you trade them.

  7. stadix093 - Mar 1, 2012 at 5:11 PM

I think Doc is tanking to get his hands on his son on the draft.

  8. rotaylla - Mar 1, 2012 at 5:26 PM

Let both of them go and start rebuilding a new team round rondo or whoever…shikena..

  9. phx1311 - Mar 1, 2012 at 5:29 PM

@redbull check out garnetts salary and you will clearly see why nobody wants him

    • redbullenergydrink - Mar 1, 2012 at 6:03 PM

      Haha, thanks.

  10. bknowledge - Mar 1, 2012 at 7:26 PM

If Celtics can get Mo Williams from Clippers in exchange for Ray Allen, it might make it easier to trade Rondo.
They could turn around and trade Rondo to New Orleans for Chris Kaman and one of New Orleans first round picks.

I would shift Paul Pierce to shooting guard, reduce his role, have him stop rebounding as much, try to extend his career. Next year Celts could trade Garnett for a first rounder…

Celts would have a couple down years, but if they draft well and Jeff Green gets well, they could be back strong in about 3/4 years…

Just a thought because clearly this Celtic era is over…

    • keyshawn22 - Mar 1, 2012 at 7:41 PM

The Celtics cant trade Garnett next year bc he will be a free agent after this season.

I wouldnt be surprised to see him re-sign for a 2 year cap friendly deal if they land a big free agent

    • Kansachusetts - Mar 1, 2012 at 11:38 PM

What is this crap about Mo Williams? His name keeps popping up. Rondo was blowing his doors off three years ago. He’s going to make it easier to trade Rondo? Have you seen Rondo play?

  11. tominma - Mar 1, 2012 at 7:40 PM

The Celtics are not going to trade their Captain–Paul Pierce! Rondo jsut signed a 5 year contract at short money for his abilities! He isnt going anywhere (unless someone offers a starter and a #1 or 2 #1s) He’s the type of pure point guard that if you surround him with 4 scorers who can play defense, he’s GREAT!

But Ainge is gonna do something!!! And it might be BIG!

  12. losangelasbasketball - Mar 1, 2012 at 8:49 PM

What, nobody wants mr. “anything is possible”?

  13. losangelasbasketball - Mar 1, 2012 at 11:18 PM

Id like to see the clippers pickup pierce or allen, but donald sterling has never spent money for players throughout the decades…. Im still in shock cp3 is a clipper and i think sterling is too. Hes never been committed to winning before….i just dont trust the dude yet….

  14. knicks4life - Mar 2, 2012 at 12:29 AM

Trade Kobe for Rajon rando , ray Allen and Paul pierce &&&& let’s go celtics

  15. adnan604 - Mar 2, 2012 at 5:42 AM

Clippers need to squash this BS of trying to get more offensive firepower, their roster consists of solid and great scorers.

What Clips need is an elite perimeter defender, someone like Tony Allen or Thabo Sefolosha, I am sick and tired of watching their defense get torn up night after night…. this whole season almost every game they been winning by outgunning the other team and hoping the other team hits a wall….

then again the bad D could be attributed to their dumb coach Del Negro, when Bulls ditched him and got Thibbs they turned into the best defensive team in the league…

  16. tsuchy34 - Mar 3, 2012 at 12:31 PM

Celtics should keep rondo and pierce. Pierce has been there his whole career and rondo has led them to 2 finals and 1 championship. Trade ray and KG and oneil
