Charles Barkley thinks that 20% of NBA fans “should be shot.” Oh, Charles.

Feb 29, 2012, 5:53 PM EDT

Barkley, representing the 1992 United States Olympic "Dream Team" in the Basketball Hall of Fame class of 2010, speaks in Springfield Reuters

Charles Barkley has never been shy about speaking his mind, and TV/Radio personality has never prevented athletes from speaking their mind when they appear on one of his shows. So when the former NBA superstar and current TNT personality Charles Barkley went on Rome’s radio show earlier this morning, the chances of Barkley saying something crazy were high. “Sir Charles” didn’t disappoint (hat tip to Royce Young of Eye on Basketball):

“Fans man. They love their team and their player. They don’t want to hear any criticisms. They just want you to be 100 percent for their team period,” Barkley said. “I think it’s only a small faction. I think 80 percent are great. Twenty percent, I wish you could take them out back and just shoot them.”

Rome jumped in there and says, “Well, maybe not shoot them, Chuck.”  But Barkley doubled down.

“No, I meant that Jim,” he said. Eighty percent of the fans are fantastic. But 20 percent of them are so mean-spirited and say the most nasty things to you, because they know you can’t grab them.”

To be fair, that bottom 20% of NBA fans can get pretty obnoxious. However, shooting people for being mean on the internet seems a touch extreme. Chalk it up to Charles being Charles, I suppose.

I have heard him suggest that an athlete should have the right to beat up at least one nasty fan without lawsuits.

Remember, this is a guy who threw a guy out of a window when he threatened to pick a fight with Charles!!!!

Charles told the judge that he regretted that it did not happen on the first floor!!!

    • chiadam - Feb 29, 2012 at 6:05 PM

Other way around. He said he regretted that it did not happen on a higher floor.

      • rajbais - Mar 9, 2012 at 9:38 PM

        my bad!

  2. chiadam - Feb 29, 2012 at 6:04 PM

And 80% of NBA players probably shoot people, so there we have it. Mr. Deal-a-Meal should stick to bouncing casino markers and being a barking seal for TNT.

I have no idea why this got so many thumbs down…or why it was the funniest thing I read all day…

    he’s right

    • raidmagic - Feb 29, 2012 at 6:35 PM

      oh God yes he’s right!!!!!

    • 1972wasalongtimeago - Mar 1, 2012 at 10:50 AM

He may be right, but nobody thinks they’re part of that 20% (ahem…ahem…tampajoey….ahem)

  4. lakerluver - Feb 29, 2012 at 6:34 PM

Chiadam, you’re just as stupid as Barkley is. Barkley says things just to get attention. Ernie Johnson and Chris Webber should do the the Pre and halftime shows. If they insist on a 3rd man I’d rather it be Kenny Smith. Bye, bye Shaq and Charles.

  5. therickstar - Feb 29, 2012 at 6:53 PM

He was right so let it go. Here’s a gun Charles. Shoot the obnoxious people first. No wait. That would be suicide

  6. hawknuts - Feb 29, 2012 at 9:26 PM

    Sir-cumference

    • blueintown - Mar 2, 2012 at 7:42 AM

“…laugh like retard that he is.” <– Irony. In fact, is this whole post meant to be ironic?

  8. mcjon22 - Feb 29, 2012 at 11:06 PM

I agree, with 19.8 percent of them being Miami Heat fans.

  9. mycm1127 - Mar 1, 2012 at 12:17 AM

I think more than 20% of commentators should be shot for being morons.

  10. asublimeday - Mar 1, 2012 at 1:30 AM

If we shot 20% of PBT fans, there’d be 10 of us left.

  11. asublimeday - Mar 1, 2012 at 1:31 AM

I agree, with 19.8 percent of them being Miami Heat fans.

Let’s just go the full 20%

I swear to Riley, I do not understand this animocity towards Heat fans. This team was a perennial bottom dweller for ever. Claws their way to the top, falls, retools with a blockbuster lineup and is trying to put together a great team.

What. It’s ok for LA & Boston to build dynasties, but screw Miamuh for trying? C’mon son. Your whining is tired and you sound like Cry Baby Dan Gilbert. Heat fans deserve a great team just as much as any other market. There’s no work in that town. People are beat the fkuck up. Let them enjoy some success somewhere.

The Heat have weaknesses. Bring your best and exploit them (Mavs did), or just stfu.

And Chuck speaks, heck, LIVES in hyperbole. What’s the problem?

      • southbeachtalent - Mar 1, 2012 at 12:34 PM

We are horrible, we support our team and the players in it. We are just plain horrible.

We should just stay quiet while OUR team and OUR town is consistently attacked by senseless arguments, irrational comments, and just spitefull hate-filled fans that are hurt cause LeBron didn’t choose their team…or left their team. We are constantly called band-wagoners cause we simply cheer for our home town team. I didn’t know that our “fanhood” became official only after commenting on these boards. I don’t see many Wizard fans on these boards, but if they suddenly became contenders they would be all over this place. Its called being proud. Just ridiculous, one would think the fans on these boards would have more perspective than the casual fan. Turns out I was completely wrong about that!

      • dikshuttle - Mar 5, 2012 at 10:53 AM

        I hear ya, bro!

  12. gmsingh - Mar 1, 2012 at 8:09 AM

Let’s be honest: Sir Charles needs to have David Stern’s job.

  13. totallydisgusted - Mar 1, 2012 at 8:13 AM

Relax. It’s a figure of speech. Not all that appropriate, but who cares

  14. max20characters - Mar 1, 2012 at 2:14 PM

He’s right. Has Miami even had a sell out this year? Knowing that, 21% of the people to be shot should be Heat fans.

    • southbeachtalent - Mar 1, 2012 at 3:29 PM

what a clown. yea maybe a few games have sold out. BTW the Knicks Heat game tickets were impossible to get $500-1000 a ticket. Get a clue loser.
