LeBron James might try the dunk contest … if the winner received a million dollars

Miami Heat's LeBron James dunks against the Chicago Bulls during their NBA basketball game in Miami Reuters

LeBron James in unquestionably one of the most violent dunkers in the game today, and could easily compete with anyone in the league in a slam dunk contest if that’s something he wanted to do. But up until this point, despite empty promises and a tease from time to time, he hasn’t decided to commit.

At All-Star media availability in Orlando on Friday, I was able to ask James why he hasn’t chosen to participate. And as much as fans may not like the answer, with LeBron now in his ninth season, it’s not an answer he’s likely to change at any point in the future … unless, of course, first prize was $1 million.

“It’s just not me, I’m not a dunk contest type of guy,” James said. “I’m an in-game dunker. I kind of improvise during the game. But, I don’t know. I’m not for scoreboards and all that type of stuff.”

But if they offered the winner a million dollars?

“Then I’d reconsider,” he said. “Wouldn’t you?”

Please not another LBJ dunk contest post. This is an off the cuff remark during an interview, it is not news. Please make it stop…

  2. ogbobbydeas - Feb 25, 2012 at 9:35 AM

He sucks and will never do it. Derek Rose, Dwayne Wade, Blake Griffin, JaVale McGee, U will never see or never see again any of these guys in the dunk contest. They are poor entertainers and only care about money. The NBA should fine these guys especially LBJ for even mentioning it. Tired of LBJ saying he is thinking about it , who cares, he would probably choke in the contest and lose just like any other basketball related activity he is in.

      “Derek Rose, Dwayne Wade”

      Who?

  3. redbullenergydrink - Feb 25, 2012 at 9:42 AM

    Bring on the LBJ haters.

  4. raidmagic - Feb 25, 2012 at 10:01 AM

“But, I don’t know. I’m not for scoreboards and all that type of stuff.”

Right from the horses mouth, it’s not about winning it’s about personal promotion. His brand couldn’t take a loss in an event like that.

    • 6thsense79 - Feb 25, 2012 at 11:07 AM

What are you talking about?? In the NBA the dunk contest is the ultimate in self promotion contests yet James has never participated.

        reread my last sentence.

I miss the days when stars entered the dunk contest

    • tcclark - Feb 25, 2012 at 10:46 AM

I miss the days when they had more than 4 guys and they rarely missed. I don’t want tosee Nate Robinson attempt the same dunk 32 times. The best contest of all time was Vince Carter’s 2000 dunk contest. What made his dunks so amazing was that he finished them on the first try and we were all surprised.

      • southbeachtalent - Feb 27, 2012 at 9:57 AM

Nope, best ever was Clyde VS. MJ. And the Dominique ones were also special. Check that, legendary..

I would love to see LBJ, Griffin (Again), Rose (he’s got some sick ups), Ibaka, Josh Smith.

Have a million dollars go to their respective charities.

  6. jimsjam33 - Feb 25, 2012 at 10:41 AM

Next year no contest unless the following stars agree to compete . Lebron James , Blake Griffin , Dwight Howard , Kobe Bryant , Kevin Durant , Derrick Rose and Dwayne Wade . If they refuse cancel the show !

  7. mikeewright7 - Feb 25, 2012 at 12:43 PM

@jimsjam33 Nobody wanna see Kobe in the Dunk Contest, he’s kinda old my guy

  8. rob0527 - Feb 25, 2012 at 12:51 PM

Why does it have to be for the money. Doesn’t he make enough from contract and Nike. He should do it for the love of the game. If he wants fans to like him, enter contest for the fans. We would love to see him dunk. Bring back the old days when dunk contest was high light of all star weekend. No more excuses,

  9. ricorake - Feb 25, 2012 at 1:21 PM

Why are there so many Lebron haters and all this choke crap? He lost to the celtics which was a better team and his second best player was Moe Williams for gods sake. He failed badly in the finals but so did alot of great players. Hell how many guys in the top ten all time position by position have rings? Not that many.

  10. gretzkyoneyzermantwo - Feb 25, 2012 at 2:05 PM

    Unlikeable people are unlikeable
    Cowards are Cowards
    Chokers are Chokers
    Bad Teammates are bad teammates

    And Lebron is Lebron

  11. cantonbound13 - Feb 25, 2012 at 2:19 PM

The great players like Jordan, Kobe, Dominique & Dr. J all won. Too much pressure on “The Chokin’ One”.

    • mytthor - Feb 25, 2012 at 11:49 PM

Good thing Larry Bird wasn’t a great player. Or Tim Duncan. Or Isaiah Thomas or Magic Johnson or Kareem Abdul-Jabbar or Karl Malone or Steve Nash or Shaq or Charles Barkley or Hakeem Olajuwon or Patrick Ewing or David Robinson or Dirk Nowitski or …

      • cantonbound13 - Feb 29, 2012 at 7:10 AM

They are not known as dunkers. Learn the game!

  12. mcjon22 - Feb 25, 2012 at 2:45 PM

With all that money, why can’t Lebron just hire the best PR guy and shut his mouth?

  13. tampajoey - Feb 25, 2012 at 3:21 PM

Lebron would only do the dunk contest if he could bring Wade and Bosh on the floor with him… and then let Wade make the last dunk for him.

    • slomo628 - Feb 26, 2012 at 2:24 AM

I see it now, Smoke machine, national press conference, “Dunk Decision”

  14. asublimeday - Feb 25, 2012 at 3:31 PM

Another difference between lebron and MJ

  15. joj0420 - Feb 25, 2012 at 3:59 PM

nothing lbj has done or will ever do will compare to mj

  16. goforthanddie - Feb 25, 2012 at 6:01 PM

Make the prize an NBA championship ring so we can all watch him choke that one away as well.

  17. losangelasbasketball - Feb 25, 2012 at 8:46 PM

Lebron is going to attempt a dunk over his illigitamate children.

  18. jason1214 - Feb 25, 2012 at 10:02 PM

LBJ can’t carry MJ’s Jockstrap, and never will

  19. jordanaires - Feb 26, 2012 at 7:19 AM

This blatant LBJ hating is pathetic. The press makes up these stories and off you go. And to veer into talking about his kids – all with the same long-time girlfriend as far as I know – is out of bounds.

    • southbeachtalent - Feb 27, 2012 at 10:00 AM

Business as usual bud. These vultures love them some LeBron.. Same type of guys that would follow him around the mall pointing their IPhones at him.
