Nets pulling out all the fireworks to impress Dwight Howard

Feb 22, 2012, 4:12 PM EDT

Orlando Magic's Dwight Howard gestures during the first half of their NBA basketball game against the Boston Celtics in Boston Reuters

Dwight Howard heads to New Jersey Wednesday night to play the Nets in the building that team will not play in next season. The Nets are going to Brooklyn, and they want Howard to join them there.

So they are pulling out all the fireworks. Literally.

Here is the tweet from Andy Vasquez, the Nets beat writer for the Bergen Record (he has photo evidence).

Nets appear to be setting up a special pregame pyrotechnic show, with Dwight Howard in town. What a coincidence.

Yes, a fancy intro should do it. It will end the entire debate.

Okay, maybe not. It goes like this: First, will Orlando’s front office decide they have to move him at the deadline, or will they take the risk and keep him through the season. If the Magic keep Howard, he will opt out of the last year of his contract, at which point the question becomes does he think he stands a better chance of winning a ring in the future in Dallas, Brooklyn or Orlando. (And pretty much not Orlando, or he would have stayed already.) The Nets have Deron Williams, but does he trust that management to put a team of good role players around them? You know Dallas will spend, but Dirk Nowitzki is not young, do you think they can transition after he leaves?

Howard will get asked all those questions at All-Star Weekend, and he will dodge them all.

Im still not 100% clear how New Jersey can put together a decent trade offer to Orlando. Im guessing Brook Lopez will be the centerpiece, but after that what? New Jersey already gave away last year’s first round pick to Utah, so the Nets can’t trade this season’s pick too. So that means the earliest pick the Magic can get will be next year’s once Deron and Dwight have finished playing their first season together, so Im guessing that pick won’t be too high. So what’s that? Lopez, and mid to late first rounder next season and what? Brooks? That deal doesn’t sound too enticing. I think a Howard and Williams team in Brooklyn would be wonderful for the league and the greater New York area, but I don’t see Jersey with enough (any) assets at all. Plus we can debate all day about Lopez but the fact that he would be looked at as the focal point of a trade for arguably a top 3 player in the league is a bit of a joke.

Remember, the Nets also will have the room to sign him as a max deal free agent.

Valid point, but I just have a hard time seeing D12 signing to a team, for Rudy Gay money. He’ll be the best player, but Deron Williams would be the highest paid player.

Where’s the evidence? We need pictures sir!

The deal would have sent Howard, small forward Hedo Turkoglu and point guard Chris Duhon to the Nets; Blazers small forward Gerald Wallace, Nets centers Brook Lopez and Johan Petro, and possibly a first-round draft pick to the Magic; and a whopping four first-round draft picks to the Blazers.

–that was the last deal offered, now if portland would still want in or if king finds another 3rd team, theres no argument outside of gasol AND bynum. The nets can get it done

Sorry the blazers would also get 4 nets 1st rnd picks. Truthfully, if im howrd and the nets i just sign as a FA. That way, the nets (and howard) can keep marshon brooks and all the 1st round picks. Either way the Lights of new york and bringing back brooklyn will be too much to overlook. Ohh, dont forget the best PG (arguably) on the planet !!

Nets are coming off as desperate (because they are). How sad ;(

I know this sounds a little too practical for Otis Smith, but why doesn’t he get someone to COME to Orlando instead of Dwight leaving? The Magic have way more pieces than the Nets can offer and Deron is in danger of leaving New Jersey as well…..

Can you stop calling players stuff like D12 and CP3 instead of using their names?

It is really cheesy and it sounds like some stupid Star wars character or one of the losers from Jersey Shore.
