Charles Oakley pretty much thinks that everybody is a wimp

Feb 21, 2012, 5:26 PM EDT

Charles Oakley

Charles Oakley was on Jim Rome’s radio show today, and the former Bulls big man had some choice words for Kevin Garnett, Charles Barkley, and Kendrick Perkins. Here are the highlights, courtesy of Larry Brown Sports:

“Garnett left Minnesota and hollered and screamed and all that but hes not a tough guy,” Oakley said as Sports Talk Network shared with us. “He’s one of the weakest guys to ever play the game. He’s a complimentary player and went to Paul Pierce’s team and won a championship. I wouldn’t consider him a top 10 tough guy…

…“Barkley, for his size, was a good player but he’s a coward,” Oakley continued. “He was a good player for his size, but he wasn’t a leader and wasn’t a role model. Now he talks so bad about younger guys. I don’t respect that from him. He’s a fraud. He can criticize all the younger kids and if he got something to say, call them and talk to them before you just blast them. He’s wants to be funny, that whole TNT thing and all that, they’re like some clowns on that show”…

…Oakley wasn’t done there. He also said that Kendrick Perkins is similar to K.G. in that all he does is holler and complain, and that the Thunder would win championships if he would just play basketball. Oakley added that Perk’s attitude is the reason he got dunked on by Blake Griffin, and said throughout his 19-year career he only got dunked on three times. Somebody check the tape on that, please.

Oakley, who was named to both the All-Defense team and the All-Star team as a member of the famously physical New York Knicks in 1994, spent the 1st few years of his career as Michael Jordan’s teammate and unofficial “enforcer,” and Jordan was famously enraged when then-Bulls GM Jerry Krause traded Oakley for Bill Cartwright before the Bulls went on their historic title runs. By most accounts, Oakley and Jordan remain good friends, but it doesn’t look like he’s looking to make many new ones.

Oakley is dead on about KG…biggest wuss for a man his size in the NBA.

  2. jwphillips17 - Feb 21, 2012 at 5:38 PM

I dare you to disagree with him.

  3. franbotel - Feb 21, 2012 at 5:44 PM

His right on all accounts especially with Charles. Barkley was a complete a**hole as a player and a bigger fraud as commentator. He goes on rants about current players but everything he complains about he did more as a player jeez he still gets into trouble as an ex-player i can think off.

  4. narrabeen23 - Feb 21, 2012 at 5:52 PM

Oakley is a throwback. Go watch some of the fouls he put on MJ specifically (his friend!), and you’ll understand why he thinks everyone is soft.

  5. airjunior23 - Feb 21, 2012 at 5:53 PM

I hate KG! he is a seven foot snagglepuss. He’s elbowing 5’11 point guards and growling and all that foolishness. He is a super fraud. I cant believe the shit he gets away with. Perkins, CMON MAN!!! Damn I hated that Boston team. Thank you Charles Oakley

  6. cantonbound13 - Feb 21, 2012 at 6:04 PM

The game has been sissified over the last 10 years. Still LeBaby can’t win a ring!

  7. cantonbound13 - Feb 21, 2012 at 6:07 PM

    Barkley’s awesome!

  8. chiadam - Feb 21, 2012 at 6:17 PM

“I don’t respect that from him. He’s a fraud. He can criticize all the younger kids and if he got something to say, call them and talk to them before you just blast them.”

Did Oakley call the players he just slammed before slamming them? He’s a sideshow. He’s Kim Kardashian: famous for being famous. He knows MJ, so that should trump his subpar resume? Whatever Barkley and KG are, they’re 500 times the player that Oakley was. And Jim Rome is a parasite.

  9. premiumpit - Feb 21, 2012 at 6:22 PM

Oakley keeping it real…Keep it comin…And garnett is a bitch

  10. rob0527 - Feb 21, 2012 at 6:34 PM

Oak does have it right about Garnett. Nobody played defense the way he did back in the 90s. No one would drive the lane on him and not expect to get hit. Todays game is a lot different, more clear outs and not as much driving to the hole. Like it or not those knicks could sure play defense.

  11. grimey317 - Feb 21, 2012 at 6:37 PM

Oak was tough, but saying no one was tough that he played against is just nuts. As a Pacer fan I know he didnt have nothing to say to Dale Davis. He probably still shits the bed thinking about DD! Check the tape Oak.

  12. 00maltliquor - Feb 21, 2012 at 6:38 PM

Ohhkaay Oak’, yeah everyone is a wimp to you except that Aria security guard that twisted you like a pretzel in Las Vegas!

  13. ogre2010 - Feb 21, 2012 at 6:49 PM

Oak Tree is DA MAN!! Love watching him play back in the day

  14. charlutes - Feb 21, 2012 at 8:28 PM

    Wow…I loved this.

  15. o2chaser - Feb 21, 2012 at 9:07 PM

Can anyone describe what defines a tough guy? How can anyone believe this absolute nonsense. Are they supposes to punch someone, fight and get ejected? 3 times huh Oakley? What a horrible use of the media. I have never liked Rome. Many can talk crap behind a desk. Check out the numbers head 2 head with Oakley and KG. What a joke.

    • xeno75 - Feb 22, 2012 at 4:54 AM

For me screaming and scowling doesn’t make KG a tough guy. But hitting smaller players and running away when they fight back makes him a wuss.

      • o2chaser - Feb 22, 2012 at 11:40 AM

Blah blah – this is more a internet reputation and band wagon arguing about KG then any truth to it. What players has he hit?(and please dont say a screen). Please provide proof before you spread BS. What player actually gets in a fight in the NBA without getting suspended? Yeah KG has some antics, but this whole idea of him having this rep is ludicrous. I have watched him since the Sota days and he has not changed.

      • loungefly74 - Feb 22, 2012 at 12:59 PM

KG has a reputation of “jawing off” to smaller and pacified players. he never yells at big guys or he backs off quickly against them. this is NOT internet rumor but the truth. NBA plyers make this accusation through out his carreer. you say you followed KG (since ‘sota) for a while so i’m not sure how you never noticed?
and were not talking about physically fighting per se…but more about mouthing off, tanglements under the boards, light shoving, etc…he was only aggressive towards “smaller” players.

      • o2chaser - Feb 22, 2012 at 2:52 PM

Yeah I do remember him in Sota like I said. You said “He never yells at big guys.” That is an absolute statement. KG yells at everyone. You said “He was only aggressive to smaller players.” Again you make it sound like its all he does. Its not true. He goes after everyone. People put a youtube video and edit to their liking because they hate a player, people join the bandwagon, comments are said, reputation started. This is not just true for KG. Most popular players receive this treatment. There is not UFC fighters in the NBA. They are not gonna box. Get over it. This whole “tough guy” or “clutch” or whatever label people like to provide on players, is just one thing: An empty label.

      • loungefly74 - Feb 23, 2012 at 2:26 PM

“absolute statement”? fine…whatever…i also said in the same sentence…” or he backs off quickly against them”…the key word being “OR” to rebuttal your “absolute statement” comment.
yeah, he does go after everyone…fine…but in the end…the league sees him as a loudmouth…or wind bag…or “all hat no cattle” type player…
and no one is editing stuff. that’s his reputation…AND I LIKE KG. i think KG is a HoFer but the guy jaws off like he has some shortcomings about whatever…

  16. seanb20124 - Feb 21, 2012 at 9:11 PM

He got beat up by a casino bouncer, then sued. What a Biatchh

    • thesourtimes - Feb 22, 2012 at 6:25 AM

      Try 5 bouncers, you moron…

  17. cmack21 - Feb 21, 2012 at 9:20 PM

can tnt put this man on tv? espn, nbc somebody!

  18. AlohaMrHand - Feb 21, 2012 at 9:45 PM

didn’t Oakley get in trouble for slapping around a woman?Yup real tough guy there

  19. o2chaser - Feb 21, 2012 at 11:01 PM

Oakley left his life Chicago and became bitter. Does he really think he is being tough? I love it when people call out crap years later. Classy

  20. jayzus - Feb 21, 2012 at 11:23 PM

Late 90s Heat Vs Nicks. Mason Ewing Oak Vs Zo PJ Brown No layups no dunks nothing in the lane.

  21. strikeoutlookin - Feb 22, 2012 at 2:44 AM

Morons… If KG was a paper tough guy why doesnt he get punked on that crap…….Like EVER…. NBA full of dudes that would eat KG up on that crapif he was fake.. Fact is that very few have tested him after 16 years….For a reason…. Old Oak Tree cant even hang on as an Assistant coach on the Worst Team basketball has ever seen….Stay relevant when you were a boarderline good NBA player, talking about a Hall of Famer, and a Future First Ballot Hall of Famer…With a Ring…. Jealous Old Man talk

    • solomon151 - Feb 22, 2012 at 11:55 AM

Charlie Villanueva told KG the very samething to his face and told him to meet him outside for calling him a cancer baby. Needless to say, KG didnt take him up on his offer, LOL

    • loungefly74 - Feb 22, 2012 at 1:06 PM

no…i think KG’s issue is he “barks” a lot…talks a lot of crap on the floor but everyone knows he is a paper-tiger…and he has been called out before…and he has quickly backed off each time. i think players just get sick off his smack and in-your-face attitude because they know he is a wimp but he continues to jaw away.
i respect KG…the guy is a HoFer…but he must be doing something wrong…i mean MJ jawed off to anyone and everybody took it.

  22. keyo84 - Feb 22, 2012 at 2:53 AM

sounds like a jealous unemployed athlete to me…. stop hating oak

  23. davidcl77 - Feb 22, 2012 at 6:43 AM

Oakley is dead on. Scottie Pippen told Barkley he was fat and didn’t work hard enough for a championship while they were together in Houston. Well said. Go get in trouble Charles. And run your loud mouth.

  24. 700levelvet - Feb 22, 2012 at 8:23 AM

Not a Celts or Garnett fan for that matter…
But here are the Facts Jim “I have given every guest on my show a BJ since Jim Everett” Rome forgot to mention…..
    Oakley…career earnings…. 45 million…
    Kevin Garnett….270 million

    • sham13ert - Feb 22, 2012 at 10:13 AM

      Michael Jordan ….. 90 million.

Doesn’t mean dick, different time before GM’s firmly planted their heads up their… well you get the point.
