Rajon Rondo ejected for throwing ball at referee

Feb 20, 2012, 8:06 AM EDT

You can bet that a suspension is coming for that one.

Rajon Rondo was frustrated in the third quarter Sunday because he had driven the lane and taken as shot, Detroit’s Greg Monroe pretty much jumped on his back (knocking Rondo to the floor) and no call was made. He has the right to be frustrated.

But you can’t fire the ball at the official out of anger (in the video above, you have to get to the 3:00 mark before they show the angle that really explains what happened). Rondo did. As they walked up court Rondo yelled at the referee about the no call then underhand fires the ball at the ref. That almost certainly will mean a game off for Rondo. Without pay.

This was Rondo’s first ever ejection and he’s not as big a complainer as some, so maybe the league is lenient on him, the Celtics are taking a wait-and-see attitude.

Boston hosts Dallas Monday, that would be a tough game not to have Rondo for. Watch PBT for updates.

He threw that ball like it was Kirk Hinrich.

Good thing the ref wasnt a woman or he would be facing charges like Kyle Lowry!! (the charges vs Lowry are upsurd, i am just making the point)

Being ejected from the game is the appropriate response, filing criminal charges is a joke and i hope the ref that Lowry threw the ball at is never allowed to work an NBA game again.

What are you talking about ?!! did you even read the specifics of the charges against Lowry ?
I can’t believe you’re defending him, normal people got names for you I won’t mention here…..
first and foremost, every witness there including the players corroborated the story, it’s why he was fined and pleaded guilty, and even if you wanna use the argument that he did it “during” the game, even that is itself invalid, because he threw the ball at her twice, first during the game and second time AFTER the game in the referee seating area….

So this Lowry moron not only lost his cool in a SUMMER LEAGUE PICKUP GAME, but he had to be restrained by other players from getting into her space after the game!

      And you’re defending this ?!?!

there’s a clear line between right and wrong, and the fact that even Lowry apologized to her after the other players had told him he was in the wrong goes to show that this was CLEARLY wrong, everyone there knew it, he knew it, he admitted it, and it’s why he plead guilty and paid his fine….

so now you wanna come on here and defend his actions even though everyone involved in the situation has said they were inappropriate and mildly criminal ?

do us all a favor and stop posting idiotic nonsense

No doubt he was (justifiably) pissed, but he’s got to know better.

Maybe the ref should learn how too catch a ball.

    God the Celtics are awful.

So a player underhanded a ball to a ref about 8 feet away…the ref didn’t catch the ball so Rondo should get suspended? I hate the Celtics, but this is way too dramatic. There was no velocity on the ball. The ref watched the ball the whole time and made no effort. This same situation happens after every offensive foul and travel, but do you know the difference? The ref doesn’t keep his hand up and make no attempt to catch the ball.

The producer of the telecast should be fined and suspended for taking 3 minutes to show a decent replay of what actually happened.
