I think its more than just being NY, its being a losing Knicks team. If Lin stepped in for the Lakers for instance, it would be a story, but he would just be an interesting sidekick to Kobe Bryant. This was the perfect storm, the Knicks were losers and searching for an identity, it’s New York City, and the perfect time where the Republican candidate race has been pretty much wrapped up and no longer that intriguiging, the NFL is in its deadest point of the year, and there’s absolutely nothing else on TV. so now Jeremy Lin can literally carry a team to the top on its own before the biggest audience possible, and with the most coverage possible. The big winners, the NBA, which finally has something people can be genuinely interested in since the 90′s.

He’s absolutely correct. For most of the digitized media, it’s now all about ratings and traffic and less about pure journalism. As much as I love PFT, etc. Florio knows that a Favre posting of any kind is so polarizing that the comments and traffic will spike, which drives up advertising revenue. Look at the coverage on ESPN, ESPN.com, SportsCenter, etc. – it’s all because Lin is playing in NYC and went to Harvard – most of ESPN’s producers, writers, talking heads, etc. are from the Northeast, many of the are NY / Boston / Philly sports fans, and also, NY is the number one media market in the world, so of course they are going to play it up.

Take nothing away from what the kid has accomplished – it’s a great story – but it’s only two weeks, and because of the constant media hype, he’s already become as polarizing as Tim Tebow.

I kind of agree. If he was in Charlotte and they went on a 7-game winning streak, it might be A story, just not as big as in New York. It still doesn’t change the fact that it’s a great story. I think what accentuates the story is that the Knicks had a lot of hype and were desperate for a point guard and out of nowhere comes Lin. But, I don’t think the story would be nearly as big outside of New York or LA.

He is right for the most part. Someone look up Nikola Pekovic of the Timberwolves. He has started the last 10 games and is putting up monster numbers. Yes the Knicks win streak adds to the hype but that will eventually come to an end. People should have been going crazy to add Pekovic to the rising stars challenge along with Lin.

hey kast2l, I’m on your side. I love Mark Cuban. My point is the owners screwed up with the CBA letting the superstar players team up together in New York, L.A., Miami, Chicago to be in big market media spotlight.

We’re fine with sportswriters giving their opinions on Jeremy Lin. We’re fine with random fans with no credentials whatsoever posting their opinions on Jeremy Lin (see every comment section). But if a guy who actually owns an NBA team (and thus is closer to this situation than 99% of the people talking about it) gives a well-reasoned opinion, then it’s an issue? Cuban talks too much. Some of his comments are stupid. This one isn’t. He’s attempting to give context to what a bizarre thing this Jeremy Lin deal is at the current moment. I thought he was more than generous with his comments. More to the point, if a person doesn’t want to hear what Cuban has to say, then clicking on an article titled “Mark Cuban says…” probably isn’t the greatest strategy. **shrug**
