They key line in the article is ‘the owner is 85 years old’. The guy can retire any time he wants to, and already has a lot of money. He is not in a hurry to do anything he doesn’t feel like doing, so he won’t. What’s the easiest thing to do?… just sit there and play more golf until time runs out.

I say Howard walks at the end of the year, and then orlando rolls the dice again in a few years for another high draft pick. Clearly Orlando doesn’t like any of the trade offers of anyone in the nba today, so they’ll let all these expensive contracts expire and just start over. It’s just easier.

Starting over in the draft, or getting a bunch of mediocre veterans, either way the team isn’t coming close to a title without a major overhaul with some quality guys. I agree with the ‘fire Otis Smith’ approach.

Or…he says Orlando is an option so that the team doesn’t trade him, then he gets to choose where he wants to play in free agency.

Why don’t they just keep Howard, but fire Otis Smith? That team was contending 2 years ago and he blew up a winning formula and took on Gilbert Arenas and his albatross contract for crying out loud….

But, the team has not shown the ability to draft or sign players to play with him. It is fine to say that he should stay, but what pieces have the Magic added while he has been there? Why should he think the front office will all of a sudden get better and be able to add pieces?

That’s not necessarily true. Howard has said Orlando is an option and he is worth the risk to not trade him. If he tells Orlando there’s a greater than 40% chance he’ll stay I say roll the dice and hope for the best.
