Video: Dunk of the year, Blake Griffin destroys Perkins

Jan 31, 2012, 12:20 AM EDT

In a season plus of insane Blake Griffin highlights, what he did to Kendrick Perkins of the Oklahoma City Thunder Monday night may be the baddest a– of them all.

This was better than the dunk over Timofey Mozgov. First, because Perkins went up and tried to contest it. Second, because it is Kendrick Perkins, one of the most physical, strongest paint defenders in the league.

LeBron James — who dunked over John Lucas on Sunday — tweeted this:

Dunk of the Year!! @blakegriffin just dunked on Kendrick Perkins so hard!! Wow!! I guess I’m #2 now. Move over #6

Kendrick Perkins took it in stride after the game, saying that if you’re a shot blocker “it happens.”

Just put this on a loop and replay it any time you need a little energy boost.

A part of me genuinely feels bad for Kendrick Perkins.

Why does everyone call that a dunk? he threw the ball in the hoop then grazed his fingers on the rim. Not a dunk, just like the dunk contest, wasnt a dunk. Dont get me wrong I think he has amazing hops and dunking abilities.

You are absolutely RIGHT, what Bad Blake did to Perkins and his now classic Mozgov were something entirely different and altogether deserving of a new and universally recognized moniker.

For now, I’ll just call it a total Blake Griffin Throw Down.

never a foul on the offensive player who uses the off arm to push the defenders arms away…

Yeah, like a referee is going to nullify that play…he would be reffing in the d-league before the night is over.

      Get real.

can somebody please give kendrick perkins a hug.

He kinda threw it through the basket rather than dunking it. It was a nice play, but I really don’t think it’s that great.

When Perk dreamed of having his picture up in kid’s rooms, this isn’t what he had in mind…

one of the strongest paint defenders in the league? What is this obsession with Kendrick Perkins? He averages a block a game. 1. uno. He averages a whole .04 more blocks a game than Timofy Mozgov. He wasn’t even one of the strongest paint defenders in the game. Ibaka and Jordan are both better “paint defenders” and honestly Durant has more shot blocking prowess than Perk. Yes there is more to guarding the paint than shot blocking and Perk is a good on the ball defender, but you are clearly insinuating that Perkins is one of the strongest shot blockers in the game and he clearly isn’t. What’s next? Is he one of the best rebounders in the league too?

I don’t see how this is as big a deal as everyone thinks it is. Sure, he went over a big player, but look at his form. Griff barely touched the rim. He did the middle school dance technique, where an 8th grader does whatever possible to make sure no part of him is anywhere near touching the dance partner.

I didn’t think it was that impressive. It was just a loud dunk. No finesse or grace.

It’s just another reason you have to love LeBron. He’s just a humble guy, going about his business the right way, paying his respects to the great ones. Wouldn’t it be nice if all our star athletes were so self-aware and respectful of the game?

Not bad for a half white guy

    In my Dave Chappelle voice,

“What did the five fingers say to the face? SLAM! Cold Bloodeeeed”

I don’t know, LBJ’s dunk on Lucas Sunday was just about as impressive.

Lucas is only 6ft, but LBJ’s knees were banging his chin.

    • 1972wasalongtimeago - Jan 31, 2012 at 11:56 AM

LeBron didn’t have the ball when he went into his jump. He jumped over an NBA player, caught a pass with one hand, and slammed it. Incredible.

      • southbeachtalent - Jan 31, 2012 at 3:40 PM

I agree, I know I’m obviously biased but LeBron’s was more impressive, Griffin’s was nasty.

Regardless this dunk will be dunk of the year until the next big dunk.

    Very Tom Chambers-esque!

  15. thelmt82 - Jan 31, 2012 at 3:51 PM

Well, as long as LeBron’s head is in the right place. It’s not like you get rings for having dunk of the year.
