Timberwolves’ Ricky Rubio looking stylish in GQ spread

Jan 26, 2012, 2:44 PM EDT

Ricky Rubio is answering the questions on the court.

Which means a lot more people want to ask him questions.

He is an in-demand media request but he handles it — like he handles pressure on the court — with the calm demeanor of a veteran. Probably has something to do with him having played in the highest levels of Spanish basketball since he was 16, having been through the Olympic experience. He is not your normal rookie.

He’s enough of a story that GQ is doing a Q&A with him this month. Here are a few highlights of the Q&A:

On the Timberwolves: “We’re close, it’s just not enough. We’re young, we can do good things, but only if we believe we can, and sometimes in games, we’re like two different teams in the same game. Like in Chicago, in the first quarter we were terrible, and then by the second quarter everything was going well—but we had to recover twenty points in five minutes. We have to play that way from the start.”

Best team he’s faced: “Chicago, in the first quarter in particular. They played really, really well. They didn’t miss any shots. We were able to play better defense as the game went along, but they are so tough, so tough.”

Best point guard he’s faced: “Wow, Derrick Rose. I knew that he was quick, but not that quick. He can move his shot all over the place, he can hit threes—just so tough to guard.”

There is nobody like Ricky Rubio…just ask him

Gotta love this kid.Gotta respect the Wolves team right now.Too bad he leaves them first chance he gets just like every other good player has done before him.

    • ThatGuy - Jan 26, 2012 at 8:55 PM

Yep, every star they’ve ever had has left first chance they get. Thats why Garnett(the only star outside of Love and Rubio) stayed 12 seasons…

      • bossmangunny - Jan 26, 2012 at 9:56 PM

Garnett stays with the Wolves 12 years, wins nothing, leaves and wins a Championship.Nobody else was gonna give Garnett that contract, thats why he stayed so many years. Is that loyalty or him seeing $$$?But yes Garnett didnt bolt first chance he got.

Actually bossmangunny garnett never even asked for a trade and would have stayed but Mchale figured he owed it to garnett to give him a chance after the foye pick didnt work and he fired dwayne casey

I agree. He looks like a future Laker. Or a Knick. I would be shocked if he’s a Timberwolves in 2 years. (And that ‘Stylish’ stuff, stop it. He looks like a 13 year-old boy in middle school.)

    • Justin - Jan 26, 2012 at 6:42 PM

Well he’ll still be under his rookie deal so I would be shocked if he isn’t.

For sure, he’s gotta wanna go to NY….. who wouldn’t?? He can lose 50 games a year, listen to Melo cry and whine and have fans screaming things at him that he doesn’t even understand. Sounds like a dream come true.

    • ihatetoneydouglas - Jan 26, 2012 at 7:32 PM

True but he wouldn’t have to have a snow plow on his Maserati when hes driving home after a game.Don’t cha know?

      • rgledz - Jan 27, 2012 at 9:50 AM

True, but he won’t get robbed and car jacked at stoplight in his maserati on his way home in Minnesota, so fugetaboutit!

Garnett didn’t win until he got 2 other stars around him that weren’t afraid to take a shot in the 4th quarter. He had success in Minnesota for many years, but never got to the conference finals until he had Cassell and Spree to take the big shots and the heat off of him. Let me remind all of the great basketball minds making comments on here that Garnett didn’t “bolt”, he was traded…..reluctantly I might add as he held the trade up for a very long time because he said that he wouldn’t sign an extension if he got traded. Oh, one more point that has slipped past some of you…..Kevin Love’s first chance just came……and went. Where is he? In a Wolves uniform.

So Kevin Mchale hooked his old team up?Hell,he doesnt seem to even care about his own team

  9. jziii - Jan 27, 2012 at 12:10 AM

He’s Ricky Rubio. He’s not like anybody else.

rookie of the year! they have some great building blocks, with the best 4 in the game and a really good point. they still need a 2 or a 3 that can create for himself and some 3 point shooting especially coming off the bench.

    • ihatetoneydouglas - Jan 27, 2012 at 2:56 PM

Sounds like they need alot..Fact is,there are many teams that are closer to having the roster they or already have it.I think its adorable the way Wolves fans and other small market team fans go overboard when they have an average or slightly above average team.As a NYer I know my team isn’t going anywhere soon.Sorry Wolves fans but you should feel the same way too.
