What’s wrong with Popovich’s reasoning is that the world welcomes American culture into their lives more than any other. I have traveled in Europe, Asia and Latin America. The same brain dead movies, TV and music are on display there. Some form of American Idol is in just about every industrialized country. Two and a Half Men is broadcast in 31 countries. The techno dance and rap music that is on the club fringe here is broadly played overseas.

We are exposed to 100% of the American pop culture. So we see all the bad stuff (honestly 75% of the mainstream stuff), as well as some of the good stuff. However, the only French or Spanish culture that makes its way over to America is the cream of the crop. Oscar-nominated films. Brilliant art. Fine wines and cheeses. The junk, such as French rap music and Spanish action movies, don’t make the trip.

Popovich thinks that American culture lags behind, but he’s comparing our worst to their best.
