Portland seems to have been cursed since they won their one and only title in 1977. The next year they were off to a great start and then the injuries hit that team and they fell apart.

And then a few years ago it was Aldridge Roy & Oden and we know how that turned out. It’s sad to see something like that happen – the Portland fans deserve better.

That’s too damn bad. He was such a promising young talent for the NBA, and with the rise of Aldridge, they could’ve formed a great duo for the Blazers and the League in general. I hope Roy can get healthy and he can find something great in life to do for himself.

I’m guessing they’re using amnesty to keep them from getting screwed if Roy decided to attempt a comeback for some reason. Darius Miles had a career-ending knee injury, was waived, and then cost the Blazers a good amount of money when he came back for a short time. I figure it’s a better safe than sorry approach.

That’s what I was asking. According to the article, a retired player has to be waived to come off the books.

you’re exactly right. clubs typically have insurance that protects against medically-induced retirement when guaranteed contracts are in play.

Why would you pay a player for quitting/retiring (same thing)? Player violates contract, contract void.
I believe medical retirements are paid in full, as insurance covers the losses. Could be wrong.

Great player its really sad to see him go this early in his career. Even though he was rarely fully healthy he was still a game changer when on the court. Good luck homie.

thanks for asking my question, Maybe the Blazers are amnestying him to gain good will with players which this will, but Roy was owed a lot of money. Can someone shed some light on this please. Compare Roy to a POS like Eddy Curry and you have a real man and a true professional. Enjoy your millions B-Roy.

How does retirement in the NBA normally work? The player still gets paid for the life of contract? I know NBA contracts are guaranteed, but so are baseball contracts- And I’ve seen multiple baseball players praised for retiring in the middle of contracts and “walking away from the money.” I figured a retirement in the NBA would work the same way. Or maybe medical based retirements would be covered by an insurance policy. I guess I didn’t think a retired player would still be on the cap. I’m asking because I don’t know.

Mannn..I feel bad for this kid. Hopefully he can join a coaching staff somewhere and still wring some enjoyment out of the game of basketball, because without playing it for the first time in his life you can expect somewhat of an emptiness inside of him.

Props to ya Roy…you have left your mark.
