The only real value for the Celtics here is getting Chris Paul. The Celtics desperately need scoring.

only if they have a pg in mind to sign as a free agent(Baron Davis, amnesty cut?) Vet pg & Monta Ellis would help the C's big time.

Get a clue. A pg's job is to pace the game. He has deficiencies, but his overall game puts him in the top 5 pg's in the league. No debate needed. As far as the sinking ship comment, well, that is just as dumb. They are aging, but Rondo is 24 years old. They have a PG. If & when they add an all star w/ the loads of cap space next year(Dwight Howard) they will be a contender again. Learn the game before commenting and looking like a jackass.

he'll be fine. Keep in mind, he is still basically a kid. He will never be a good shooter, it just wont happen. I have coached bball for 2 decades. Some guys cant shoot. It is what it is. The thing about Rondo is he is quick and smart, so he will always be a plus over a minus. The problem- Ray is getting old & he misses shots in the 4th. Teams leave Rondo open, and unless KG is on or Paul is on(few and far between these days) they cant score at the end of games. If they can trade for Chris Paul, do it. If not, Rondo is your best option, but they MUST add a couple scorers. This team can still win a title w/ improvement in the scoring department. They miss so many shots. THAT is why they lost to Miami. Anyone who argues that is dead wrong.

Perkins is very limited as a player. YES, he's a dominant inside defensive player but not a shot blocker. He rebounds ok but certainly not among the elite! Plus, the Celts didnt think he was worth what OKC signed him for. For $48M for 4 years, ya need more production from him!

As for Rondo, if he's surrounded with scorers, he's pretty near unstoppable. He DOES need to improve his medium range shot, but he doesnt look for his shot first like so many of the other so called point guards do. He's more Cousy than Chris Paul! PLus, he's a real devil on defense at the point! I say the Celts should keep him and get some scorers who can dedidicate themselves to team defense. That is River's style!

Trading him and getting comparable value in return might not be all that easy. He's a very good player but also a rather unique talent. He's absolutely perfect when there are guys like Garnett, Pierce and Allen around him, but he's not going to be your first or second option the way some other point guards like a Rose, a Paul or a Westbrook can be. There are many teams that would shy away from any PG that couldn't consistently hit the midrange jumper.

Boston is going to eventually need to figure out what the next era is going to look like after their Big 3 are gone. There are no guarantees that Rondo will fit nearly as well into a different lineup as he has with these guys.

3 words--ain't gonna happen. Celtics aren't that stupid, everyone knows this kid is uniquely talented. The scoring will come. You can't teach the ball handling skills and intangibles that Rondo naturally posesses.
Dumbest trade ever! I'm still baffled by it almost a year later. Who gives up their anchor during a title run? That said, I dont doubt for a second that Danny Ainge could follow that move by giving up Rondo

"he’s the guy you want to pair with that cornerstone"

No, he isn't. His limitations are mortal for a point guard. While he is an exciting penetrator and a good passer, he has some holes that the Celtics cannot get around with him.

He is a very poor shooter, and other teams drop off him into the passing lanes. When the Boston offense stagnates, that is why. They can play 5 on 4 on defense and Rondo cannot make them pay consistently.

Rondo is also a very poor free throw shooter. While a fine ballhandler, he cannot be the guy you can give the ball to in the closing minutes of a game, because he simply cannot make foul shots.

Both of those flaws are correctable to an extent. Which leads to the conclusion that he never works on the weak points of his game. He shot 57% from the free throw line last year. When he handles the ball a large share of the time, that is horrendous.

Both of those flaws have allowed teams to exploit the Celtics and it cost them games. They have enough weaknesses already without a point guard who can't shoot and can't handle the ball down the stretch of a tight game.

I don't completely disagree with your explaination of Rondo's game, but I think it's important to remember that when you watch a guy play every day you see ALL of his mistakes. You see everything bad and on a good team those bad things usually stand out more than the good. As an outsider that only sees him play 5-10 times a year, it's hard for me to see why they would trade a PG of his ilk.

I agree with the writer that it would take a massive multiplayer trade to make this happen. You simply don't give up your starting PG when you have a veteran team with maybe two years left.

"Rondo is the best PG in the league"? This comment is about as stupid as this post! In other words why not trade him and get him off of that sinking ship called the Boston Celtics! That franchise is now done and the best bet would be to start making trades for the future.

I propose this for completely selfish reasons, but I wonder if Boston would be interested in trading Rondo for Ellis. Ellis is definitely a better scorer than Rondo, and he can create shots for others. His defense at point would be better, too. Just a thought.

Another dumb story to get a few hits on NBC's sports page! The Celts are NOT going to trade Rondo--- unless it's for John Wall and a 1st rounder. Rondo is the best point guard in the league. Eventually, he'll learn to shoot good enough to make teams honor him! But Rondo can ALREADY score!
