I think it is more likely that for 2013/14 (last year of his contract) , they extend Kobe’s contract to 2015/16 (2 more years), renegotiating the 13/14 salary so that some of that salary is deffered through 2015/16 adn LA isn’t taking such a big hit in 13/14.

No way Kobe doesn’t get amnestied by year 3 regardless of what happens with Dwight and CP3. 30 million for a 36 year old Kobe? And a repeater tax bill starting at 2.50:1 going up more and more for every 5mil over the luxury threshold? That’s just insane.

They’d have been better off with a hard cap.

Dr Buss may be rich, but he ain’t crazy. Paying 60 odd million is luxury taxes isn’t an option for a team with no real shot at a title.

Difficult part for the Lakers is finding someone who values their key pieces. Sure Pau is a top 20 player, but at his salary, he’s a lot less valuable to most teams. The only piece that probably generates a top player in a trade is Bynum. If the Howard trade is still out there, I hope they can finally get Jim Buss to let him go. Howard could transform the team for the future, a younger key piece who could attract other free agents. They’ve got to find that bridge beyond Kobe, otherwise things could get bleak 2-3 years down the line.
