I absolutely detest the term perpetuated by the league’s NBA channel’s anchors. That term is “role player”. There is nothing eloquent or complimentary about being rewarded with a title that reflects a non-starter’s contribution to his team. These players have worked hard to make it to an NBA team. They may not be starters, but they are pro basketball players and that says they are some of the best in the world. There are approximately 360 players in this distinguished league. Of the 360 players 150 are starters and 210 come off the bench. Some are defensive specialist and some are scoring specialists all are professional athletes. They all have put in many hours of work and have endured incredible obstacles to earn their place at the pinnacle of this game. None deserve to be referred to as merely a role player.
