Derrick Rose says he’s going to win multiple championships. Sound familiar?

Derrick Rose spoke to HoopsHype at an event in Madrid. Among a number of subjects, Rose talked about working on a post game, which is a pretty exciting idea, even if every superstar says they’re working on a post-game in the summer and few actually implement one. But more interesting was this little tidbit.

Time has passed since you won the MVP trophy award. What are your feelings about it now?

DR: It was great but I’m not satisfied. I won’t be satisfied until I win a championship. I’m not satisfied at all. There’s not a doubt in my mind that I’m not going to win a championship. I’m going win multiple championships. It’s not a doubt in my mind.

via NBA Blogs – Raul Barrigon » Derrick Rose: “I’m going to win multiple championships”.

So, just to be clear on this. A young MVP player who has never won a championship has said that he’s going to win multiple titles before collecting a single one. Now, granted, Rose didn’t say “Not two, not three, four, not five, not six, not seven,” etc. like one Mr. James did, but isn’t the meaning the same? It’s counting your chickens before they’ve hatched. Putting the cart before the horse. Getting ahead of yourself. Other cliches.

Guess how much criticism Rose will get for this? None. Because he did it quietly in an interview with a website in Spain while James did it on a stage with smoke and pyro after a nationally televised special to announce he was betraying his hometown. But for a player so often described as humble, Rose has said he’s going to win the MVP, then going to win multiple titles in back to back years. Of course, another difference, Rose backed up his talk with the MVP last year.

This isn’t meant to say we should criticize Rose. It’s to say that the criticism for James was, as always, blown out of all reasonable proportion. Every great player in the NBA thinks they’re going to win multiple titles. It takes years for players to learn how valuable just getting one is.

Either that, or they play for the Lakers.

    1) It wasn’t LeBron James, but rather Dwyane Wade made the comment about, “Not 1, not 2, not 3”, etc…

    2) This post could have gone without ANY mention of LeBron James or the Miami Heat and still made the same point.

    3) I’m a Bulls fan, and as big a Derrick Rose fan as there is, and I’ll be the first to say that he needs to slow his roll. There’s all kinds of legends to have played the game who left it without a ring. Rose’s confidence in himself is fantastic, but he needs to know that hard work and dedication, or even being the best at what you do isn’t always enough. He isn’t gaining any fans with comments like these, and he’d be best off letting his (awesome) game do the talking for him.

Boondock, thanks for your comment. Regarding whether it was James or Wade:

        I stand corrected. *tips cap*

      LeFraud made that idiotic comment…

Unless he said we are going to win 8 championships, this dosnt even come close to Lebrons chochy cockiness. Who cares. Lets keep making Lebron uncomftorable.

  3. dukesanuch - Aug 21, 2011 at 12:54 PM

I felt he was getting ahead of himself last year when he said he would be MVP, but I’ll be damned if he didn’t go out and get it. They mean business in Englewood I guess.

You guys are obsessed with bron bron to the point that you’re comparing the nbas least likable player with it’s most likable.

    • Matt Moore - Aug 21, 2011 at 1:29 PM

Didn’t see a reference to Kevin Durant here. Let me recheck…

That is your personal man crush and you should keep it privet.

Good heavens can you really not make one post without Lebron?!

    • Matt Moore - Aug 21, 2011 at 1:29 PM

      Thanks for reading!

It may be splitting hairs, but there is a difference between stating you WILL win multiple championships and stating that you believe you will win multiple championships.

How dare you link this to LeBron! Just because your job is to analyze what happens in the NBA and anyone with half a brain would link this statement to what LeBron said?!?!

The hatred for LeBron is really ridiculous. Listen here, idiot commenters: LeBron is one of the best players in the NBA. He is the single most polarizing figure in the NBA. To expect a sportswriter not to draw on obvious connection to him just because he somehow hurt your feelings by making a good career move that in no way affected anything having to do with your life unless you are a Cavs fan, and even then only minorly so, is juvenile and ridiculous. Talk about HIM being arrogant; you think someone who doesn’t even know you should refrain from talking about him when it’s their JOB just because you don’t like him? That is some amazing arrogance.

    Grow up.

The writer of this article, is trying to cause a riff with the way his words came out. Derick Rose, was as a question and he gave his answer. At least, he will be the go to guy, when ge wins a title. Unlike Prince James, who riding on Dwayne Wade back. And, these are facts.

  9. bobulated - Aug 21, 2011 at 4:05 PM

Rose is a great player but until the Bulls find him some scoring help the number of Bulls championships w/o MJ will remain at zero.

Boondocksaints224 does raise a good point….story had nothing to do with lebron james but u still managed to criticize him in a story that wasn’t about him. U must be proud.

    • rreducla1 - Aug 21, 2011 at 8:05 PM

Plus he managed to bring the Lakers into it. Moore is sort of a K-Mart version of Henry Abbott.

I remember when players just won & let their “talking” come after they actually accomplished something. Lebron & players like Rose are so full of themselves!

  12. killface1981 - Aug 21, 2011 at 8:09 PM

Derrick Rose does realize that LeBron completely made him look like Stephon Marbuy before they faced a real team who had beaten far better teams like the Lakers and the Thunder. And it’s hilarious that LeBron was then dissected by the Jet and J.J. Barea while Dirk couldn’t be covered by anyone on the Heat… but since teams like the Blazers, Lakers and Thunder couldn’t slow him down so that shouldn’t have surprised anyone.

  13. kingadam12 - Aug 21, 2011 at 10:13 PM

Well lebron is a great player not a fan at all but i hate when ppl question his game…he is a douche tho but rose needs to slow it down…i think he will win aleast 2

  14. southbeachtalent - Aug 22, 2011 at 5:00 PM

How dare you drag Rose’ name through the mud! This is way different than what LeSatan said!!! He said he would win multiple championships and LeSatan said … oh wait.. yep my bad.

Rose gets a pass, he’s not LeBron.

BTW commentors here’s a nugget of information you may want to consider, especially the ones that are upset that this site continues to whore out LeBron’s name. Take a peak at the most commented posts, I guarantee that on average there are 3 LeBron stories on tap. If you click and read the comments it will read something like this, ” LeChoke is a choker”, “LeBrick has a vagina” etc.. From the same old usual no life posters that really offer no insight or real substance.

Nevertheless my insightful tip will be ignored and the same old losers will continue to spew hate and provide nothing but ignorance and stupidity. Meanwhile the posts continue to climb….and the cycle continues.

As a Heat fan I LOVE IT. Talk about bulletin board material, Spo wont even have to address the players in pre-game anymore. Simply paste all the articles around the locker room and step back. Keep it comin’ we love it!

  15. africanballer - Aug 23, 2011 at 7:10 AM

It doesn’t matter if Lebron wins a ring today. He’ll still be hated, like he was hated for gracing sports illustrated cover etc etc. So I won’t even focus on that. I love Derrick and the bulls. But I don’t like this type of talk. Leave this kind of talk to those other players and team we know. Just do your thing. We already know you’re going to win the multiple championships. I just don’t like it when it’s coming from your mouth. You’re already paving the way for the hall of fame, but let your game do the talking night in and night out.
