Even Obama thinks Rondo needs to get a jumper

One game this March, Rajon Rondo’s jumper was just off. What game? Take your pick. But this time it was President Barack Obama’s fault.

At least that’s how Shaquille O’Neal remembers it.

Shaq, who was with the Celtics in spirit last year if not on the court, has a new book coming out written with ESPN’s Jackie MacMullan. has this excerpt.

In early March some of the guys went to the museum of Fine Arts for a fund-raiser and got to hang with President Barack Obama. Everyone was a little bit in awe. The President turns to Ray, points at Rondo, and says, “Hey, Ray, why don’t you teach this kid how to shoot?” Everyone starts laughing.

KG told me he saw the look on Rondo’s face and the kid was devastated, embarrassed. Dissed by the President, even though I’m sure Obama didn’t mean any harm. Rondo smiled and went along with all of it, but KG told me he could see it in his eyes. It bothered Rondo. It killed him.

The next day Rondo shot the ball horribly. He stopped taking shots after that. He’s so sensitive. I think it was a real jolt to hear the outside perception of a basketball fan who happens to be the President of the United States. It messed with his mind. I’m sure of it.

Obama wishes it were so easy to throw the Republicans off their game.

    Who cares?

    • wvan10 - Aug 17, 2011 at 2:23 PM

Somewhere Kobe Bryant is laughing is ass off!

  2. mornelithe - Aug 17, 2011 at 1:19 PM

lol, everyone blames Obama for everything, why not add one more to the list, right?

If Shaq believes Rondo’s so unprofessional that he can’t turn off outside distractions, that’s Shaq’s problem, and, well, he’s retired for a reason.

    • b7p19 - Aug 17, 2011 at 1:47 PM

Yikes, looks like Rondo isn’t the only sensitive one…

      • mornelithe - Aug 17, 2011 at 2:05 PM

Say what? How exactly does that make me ‘sensitive’? lol.

  3. seattlesuperchronic - Aug 17, 2011 at 1:31 PM

We are buried in debt and our joke of a president is talking about Rondo. Eat the meat Mr. President.

I dear you to go in front of the white house, yell that with a BB in your hand!!!

    • florida727 - Aug 17, 2011 at 3:43 PM

Here’s right. This president spends money like a drunken sailor (with all due respect to drunken sailors the world over), has failed policy after failed policy, unemployment was at 6.5% when he took office, now it’s approaching 10%, increased the debt ceiling from roughly $10 trillion when he took office, to $16.7 trillion today, is the first president in HISTORY to have America’s credit rating be anything other than AAA under HIS watch (including during the Great Depression), and you get almost 40 thumbs-down clicks on “seattle…” post? Wake the f*ck up people. THAT is why he gets criticized. Until his own house (aka: America) is in order, he has no business vacationing or trying to play wanna-be athlete (see North Carolina hoops joke of a scrimmage).

      • blueintown - Aug 17, 2011 at 4:14 PM

Shut up. Go away. This is a basketball forum, not a Fox News forum.

      • florida727 - Aug 17, 2011 at 4:27 PM

Why? Because you don’t want FACTS to get in the way of your love-fest for Barry? How’s that “hope and change” crap working out for you?

      • blueintown - Aug 17, 2011 at 5:51 PM

No. Because this is a basketball forum.

      • philliphernandez - Aug 18, 2011 at 12:21 AM

The hope and change work just fine for me I work in aerospace engineering, you either change or go out of business, but blueintown is right this is a basketball forum. Step up your game florida727 or get run; you are probably only pulling 35k anyway you should be doing a lot better tax-wise.

On topic though I hope Rondo never works on his jumper, because he carves up the Lakers every time they meet. little Buss can’t get it through his head that they need to draft a quick guard to match up with all the quick PG’s. So Rondo, please stay depressed, don’t practice your jumper and for God’s sake gain some weight this off season because its the only chance that Fish has to keep up with you.

      • lebronsinsecurity - Aug 18, 2011 at 12:38 PM

Gotta love people who claim they are giving facts while spouting Fox news propaganda.. Florida727, if you honestly think that our economic downturn is the result of one man, you are beyond delusional. Take a college level Macroeconomics course before you claim to know what you are talking about. Oh that’s right, republicans don’t use simple economics.. Why am I even arguing though, people of this nature don’t want to hear the fact that their boy G.W. Bush gave us this terrible economy that will take nearly 10+ years to get out of… America is getting stupider by the day..

    • connaniii - Aug 18, 2011 at 12:07 PM

So you want us to believe that if there were “another” person in the Whitehouse things might just be different? Get a grip man, you good for nothing Republicans share a good part of the wrongness which is aflicting our nation, have the guts to admitted at least.

      • skids003 - Aug 18, 2011 at 12:14 PM

And you stupid ass Democrats want to pander to all the non productive groups in the USA to get and keep your power. Eventually you idiots will run out of the productive people’s money to keep spending.

    • dysraw1 - Aug 23, 2011 at 11:43 PM

I dont see how any reasonably inteligent person can blame obama for the countrys debt, after 8 years of gw. give a break

  4. edmazeing1 - Aug 17, 2011 at 1:38 PM

He was just playing with Rando, if u let criticism get to you as a sports player, then he might as well retire now!!!

  5. stinkfingers - Aug 17, 2011 at 2:36 PM

Tell you what Prez… Rondo will work on his garbage jumper if you work on that garbage health care bill that you crammed down everybody’s throat.

  7. bloodydamnsox - Aug 18, 2011 at 12:25 AM

Yeah, this a basketball forum! Btw our top BB fan has raised more money foe this country in 3 years than in the previous 8. And where is Bin Laden? Educate yourself Flo!

  8. missmomo1 - Aug 18, 2011 at 12:49 AM

I don’t think Rondo is super sensitive, he hears this kind of garbage from every idiot out there, but to hear it come out of the President’s mouth, probably shocked him. He obviously didn’t see it coming; though I don’t think Barack meant any ill will, he shouldn’t just tell Ray to teach Rondo how to do his job. He should know better, period. What if somebody said, “Hey MJ, why don’t you teach LeBron how to be more clutch!” How rude would that be?? (Not trying to be mean, I like LeBron) Either way, I dont think it rattled him for the rest of the season, I just don’t believe that. Rondo has a lot of confidence and this little comment isn’t gonna bring him down; this is the same man who came back into a game after dislocating his elbow, he’s not easily rattled. He’s a great player, this is only going to motivate him to come out stronger next season.

Oh you Americans cant take a joke can ya?

Always taking everything you ever hear to heart..

No wonder so many of you yanks have Depression and Anxiety Disorders.. Relax have a laugh – I guarantee you Obama was joking and just trying to be endearing to the young guy

Grow up and take a joke America…

  10. connaniii - Aug 18, 2011 at 12:14 PM

He didn’t choke,he was practically a one armed bandit, I wonder how any one Kobe include could play with only one arm. If he hadn’t gotten injured it might had been a totally different story!!!!

  11. dailyrev - Aug 18, 2011 at 1:20 PM

Drone aircraft sighted over Rondo’s house…

  12. dailyrev - Aug 18, 2011 at 1:20 PM

Hey Shaq, haven’t you seen what this guy does to whistleblowers? It ain’t pretty. Just warning you…

  13. dysraw1 - Aug 18, 2011 at 8:24 PM

Should young rondo ever develope that jumper, the whole league is in trouble. And as for the political side of things, i dont know anybody whos breaking their neck to go to the doctor. so what wrong with having a health care program, where you dont have to give up your life savings, should you need a doctor.

  14. killface1981 - Aug 22, 2011 at 12:33 AM

This is why Rondo still can’t shoot or hit a a few free throws when they can tie it up at the end of the game sending the game into overtime… oh wait, he won’t let himself get fouled and he’ll make a pass that forces KG who is 2 for 10 in the game to take 16 foot jumper or Allen who hasn’t taken a shot since right after the second half started to take a leaning 20 foot jumper that is at an odd angle.

Until Rondo can hit 75 percent at the line(which still is pretty crappy for a point guard), and doesn’t have a solid mid range jumper while upping his 3 point shooting percentage up to around 34-35 percent(also not “elite”)he’ll never be an elite point guard.

Look at Jason Kidd who was known as a guy who couldn’t shoot 70 percent from the line and barely broke 30 percent from 3 early in his career. Now he’s shot 80 percent or higher in 8 of his last 11 seasons, and over 35 percent 5 out of his past 7 seasons(twice shooting 40 percent or higher.) He’s only once scored more than 13 ppg and the “Big 3” are all in the twilight of their careers.

  15. borderline1988 - Aug 22, 2011 at 9:25 AM

    Nothing new learned here.
Rondo has incredible skills on defense and remarkable speed and dishing abilities on the other side.
But he is very cocky and immature, and not in a good way. He lacks leadership abilties and has a temper. He is hard to coach. The only reason why it has gone well for him so far is b/c he’s surrounded by hard-working veterans who keep him in line.

If he’s traded to another team where he is required to be a team leader OFF the court, he will fail miserably. I can see him constantly picking fights with teammates and coaches.
The fact that the President got into his head like that shows his immaturity. He has no real’s more like the confidence that is based on beating others and looking good (kind of like how insecure bullies need to hit other kids). If the President said that to Derrick Rose, you can be assured that Rose would’ve hit a bunch of 3s and then sent Obama a postcard or something.

Anyways, the President is correct. Without 2 of the best clutch 3pt shooters (Allen, Pierce) and maybe the best jumpshooting big in history (Garnett), do you really think Rondo is as valuable as he is made out to be, without a jumper of his own? m
