Granger wants Indiana to go after a power forward

Indiana was back in the playoffs last season after a four-year absence. They have a young core with Danny Granger, Paul George, Roy Hibbert and Darren Collison.

And they have a lot of money to spend. We may not know what the league’s post-lockout salary structure will look like, but we do know the Pacers have just $35 million on the books for next season. Whatever the cap is (and whatever kind of cap it is, there will be money to spend.

Danny Granger has a shopping list. He gave it to the Indianapolis Star (hat tip to Eye on Basketball).

I think with what’s on the market at power forward, we have the opportunity to go get one of them. David West, Nene and Carl Landry are available. There are some good power forwards out there. I think we need to be deeper at that position.

For the record, the Pacers got better production than people think out of Josh McRoberts and Tyler Hansbrough at the four. If you look at PER differential, it was their best position. And Granger played a fair amount at the four as the Pacers tried to go small.

That said, this is a year with some good fours on the market. And it’s a year the Pacers can spend. And guys like West or Nene would be a big upgrade. But can Indiana lure guys like West and Nene who want a ring? If the choice is Carl Landry, is that enough of an upgrade for the expense?

What a slap in the face to Tyler Hansbrough. He started to come into his own the last couple of months or so before the playoffs. I think in the long run or hell, even short term he’ll be better than those 3 guys Granger wants, so as long as he can fend off injuries.

Pacers would be foolish to blow their cap room on one of those guys. I’ve been saying for a year now that they are 1 major piece away from being a top notch competitor, but they need a legit #1 option. As nice as Granger is, he’s really a #2 and getting West or Nene won’t put them over the top as much as it will just get them in the playoffs as a bottom feeding 6/7-8 seed. They do have a lot of nice pieces and you can laugh all you want but they are kinda deep. Just need to grow together with some minor tweeks.
