Yao is so consistent in this game, Bryant so maddeningly conscience-less and at the same time brilliant, it stands as a time capsule for their careers.

For a lot of people, though, not so much. Yao’s legacy as a player in many ways, if not as a cultural figure, will be, unfortunately, that he couldn’t stay on the floor. His career was defined by injuries. That is unfortunate for all of us.

A big part of Bryant’s legacy, in contrast, is his durability. Yao didn’t play any full seasons after this. Bryant, OTOH, played 82 games in 2008 and his team went to the Finals. He then won a Gold medal in the summer of 2008, and then played 82 games again in 2009 and his team won the title.
