I have a question. If all these teams are losing money how come I have not heard anything about contraction? Could it be assumed that some markets just can't support teams? Just wondering

Players are rich because they're in NBA basketball. Owners are in NBA Basketball because they are rich. Not too many owners who made their fortune in the NBA. General comment. With that said, not a lot of privately held companies have to open their books to employees. Name another industry where the employees union get x% of revenue. The employees can either accept a payscale or go work elsewhere. The fact that they can't though muddies it all up and the fact that the NBA can't be great without them muddies it up. The fan base as a whole will be better off with a hard cap, revenue sharing, and minimum club salary expenditure that brings more equity and quality to every city. But good luck with that......

Actually, there IS a quick fix to this situation. The owners are crying that they "lose money", yet refuse to open their books. Players are asked to take a pay cut with no evidence ... zero ... that the owners are telling the truth. If the owners open the books and prove that they are in financial straits, I suspect they could get a deal very quickly with the players. On the other hand, if the owners open their books and it proves that they are making BIG MONEY and paying multi-million dollar salaries to family members for no real job like other professional sports teams do (see: McCourt, Jamie), then the owners will be ready to strike a deal.

Meanwhile, the owners need to implement full revenue sharing if they don't want a big market/small market divide to exist.

No owner is required to make any of the bad deals that they make. No one forced the Capitals to sign Gilbert Arenas to a $124M deal. No one is forcing the Sonics to make an $8.8M deal with Greg Oden. Teams CHOOSE to do those foolish deals, and they insist on a rule that limits their ability to be foolish. Why? No other business has that type of deal in place. Run your business well and prosper. Run your business poorly and go out of business. It's good enough for (most) other businesses in this country ... why not for NBA businesses? Seriously, who made Teds Leonsis sign Arenas?

What type of "salary cap" agreement did they have in place at AOL when Leonsis worked there? What type of "salary cap" agreement did they have in place at Redgate Communications? What type of "salary cap" agreement did they have in place at Wang Labs when he worked there? What type of "salary cap" agreement do they have in place today at Monumental Sports and Entertainment? At Nutrisystem? At Lucent? At American Express?

Why can Ted Leonsis run all these other businesses without a salary cap agreement with his competitors (which would be illegal) but he NEEDS one for the Capitals?
