Pistons GM Dumars has “sense of freedom” with new owner

Detroit Pistons Introduce John Kuester

It became clear within the last year (maybe before that really, but let’s not go there now) that it was time to break up the Detroit Pistons and start to rebuild. The roster that at one point was an Eastern Conference Finals fixture had been caught by father time.

But general manager Joe Dumars’ hands were tied. The team had been on the market since 2009 and there was little he could do because of it.

Now he loves his job again thanks to new owner Tom Gores, and you can expect to see a more active Pistons team, Dumars told the Detroit News.

“Sense of freedom — that’s a good term,” he said. “Listen, you do these jobs and you have to throw yourself into them completely 100 percent. You can’t do these jobs with any level of success if you’re 50 percent, 60 percent of what you can and can’t do.”

Dumars hasn’t made a trade since July 2009, the longest stretch in the league — and his longest since he was named Pistons president in 2000…. The Pistons had significant conversations at the trade deadline, most involving longtime Pistons Richard Hamilton and Tayshaun Prince. But the kind of deals they could explore was limited, due to the pending sale.

Gores was in the Pistons war room during the draft and was supportive of Dumars, who shifted gears when Kentucky point guard Brandon Knight fell down the board to them at No. 8. The plan had been to go with a big, but a number of teams had Knight rated in the top four in this draft and the Pistons could not pass him up.

Once the lockout ends, look for Dumars to be active in reshaping the Pistons roster. A process that should have started a while back, but now Dumars can finally get to work on it.

So the previous owner was the reason you drafted Darko over Melo?
I guess he also forced you to trade Billups for Iverson too?
Time to put your home on the market Joe D.

And what about those huge contracts for Charlie Villanueva and Ben Gordon? Dumars’ fishing for excuses

You right I’ve questioned a lot of Rinsed decisions over the past 2 years Ben Gordon is one dimisional and Charlie v doesn’t play defense And darling should have been a automatic fire I see why Larry Brown Lef! lol

Joe Dumars is one of the Best 10 GM’s in the league. He built a contender out of a basement dweller in the 00 which included a Championship and if Rasheed doesnt leave Big Shot Bob Horry wide open in game six another. As far as Darko he was the consensus number 2 pick every GM in the leage would of made that pick but Joe D cut bait much quicker then most GM’s would. Iverson for Billups was a bad trade but the Pistons weren’t wining a championship that year anyways and he was hoping to catch lightning in a bottle.

    Darko wasn’t everyone’s #2.
He refused to work out vs other players when he got killed in practices.
The fans up there wanted Melo and they said they wouldn’t pick him because of Prince.
So you take Darko when you had Ben, Sheed at the starters?
Melo could play SF and Prince backup SF/PF.
They do that and they will 2 more rings.
Face it. Joe D hasn’t made any good moves as GM once Larry Brown left.
Larry Brown didn’t want Darko either.

The Pistons have won the third most playoff games after the Spurs and Lakers since Joe D took over. The franchise has run into trouble in the last couple of years at the same time as the owner died. It does not make any sense to fire Joe D once the Ownership problem is figured out.

Sheed was traded for at the trade deadline, AFTER we already had drafted Darko.
      YOU FAIL

Great you drafted Darko before trading for Sheed.
Good catch. Forgot about Cliff Robinson and Ohur being there.
Still doesn’t make the pick worthy.
    Melo was a proven star.
Other than Prince what other draft pick would you consider good?
