Lakers don't really do the whole rebuilding thing though. Even aging, he's still one of the top players in the league. Not to mention, the Lakers wouldn't have to give up all three of their 7 footers, so there'd still be another outstanding big man to pair with Dwight. And the Lakers have so much money to spend and aren't afraid to spend it either.

I don't think it's a very possible scenario, and I don't think it would make them odds-on favorites to win the title, but adding Dwight to the Lakers would definitely be a contending team. Even as Kobe ages and retires, the Lakers have the personnel in the front office that have proven they are capable of building championship caliber teams- something the Magic have not yet shown.

Yeah. Kobe's falling apart, and the Lakers obviously aren't the Lakers w/o him. What's the point in tying your future to a Kobe who doesn't have that much time left? Maybe Dwight wants to go somewhere with a brighter future.

His public statement about wanting to stay in Orlando sounds like an owner or GM saying "I have complete confidence in [player or coach name]. If you want to stay, you don't have to say it. The better announcement would be that he is declining free agency to sign a long-term extension.

If Dwight leaves, it's not for L.A. It could be for the Nets, but I have a feeling Deron Williams would rather go to Orlando to play with Dwight.
Straight across? Of course the Lakers do it in a second. But the Magic would be crazy. What else would the Lakers give up? Bynum is pretty damn close to Howard in everything except durability: they're about equal in offensive game, Howard has improved but Bynum hitting 20% more of his free throws is 1-2 more points per game so it balances.

Rebounding Howard has better numbers but he also doesn't have 2 other all star rebounders to contend with - the Magic are built around Howard getting every rebound and it's not as big a disparity as you'd think. Howard's better defensively, but interior defense is not the Lakers' problem. Backcourt/wing depth, shooting, and the PG position are the Lakers' problems. You'd have to give up some assets from those very spots to get Howard, and you'd have to extend him and there's no guarantee the new CBA will have a provision for extending your own player if you're over the cap. I'm not even sure what those alleged assets would be for the Lakers. They're not trading Kobe, Pau or Lamar, and no one's taking Artest. That leaves dime-a-dozen guys like Shannon Brown and Matt Barnes.

No one in Orlando thinks a Bynum-Barnes combo is better prospect than Dwight Howard.

Why wouldnt he?...

Why wouldnt anyone?

Dwight Howard & Andrew Bynum should not be mentioned in the same sentence...Howard is a beast (literally). Bynum is great too, but he is no Dwight.

Dwight Howard & Kobe Bryant on the same team would be ridiculous. Just hand them the trophy now.
