Barea billboard takes a jab at Kobe

Jun 7, 2011, 5:00 PM EDT

Barea Billboard

That is a billboard in Dallas guard J.J. Barea’s native Puerto Rico. The statement on it (via The Basketball Jones, via Bethlehem Shoals), translates to “Only my ribs hurt, but for Kobe, it’s his ego.”

When the Mavericks were leading by 30 in the final quarter of the final game of a sweep of the Lakers, Barea was laid out while making a floater by a brutal hit from the Lakers’ Andrew Bynum, who was suspended from the foul. Considering the “ribs” comment, the billboard seems to be a reference to that specific moment, with Kobe switched in for Bynum because of name recognition purposes. Bynum was suspended for the hit, but for Barea, this billboard is a pretty sweet way to get back at the Lakers for the needless cheap shot they took at him. It’s entirely possible that Carlisle decided to start Barea over Stevenson in Game 4 solely because he was made aware of this billboard.

Typical young guy with no respect for legends. What’s his next move? Talking smack about Wilt, Dr.J, Pistol Pete and Earl the Pearl?

Yeah since it was Barea himself who put up the billboard…???

Kobe must be sitting on his couch tonight looking as his right hand which has a championship ring on every finger just thinking about how great of a player JJ Barea is with all of his accomplishments in the sport of basketball.

Let’s see All Stars, nope, Championships, nope, MVP’s, nope……

What exactly has Barea or the Mav’s done but choke?

Winners tend to save their trash talk for after winning the big one, not just making it to the dance.

guess how much Kobe Bryant cares?

its crazy, I’ve never seen 1 player as great as Kobe get so disrespected because he didnt make the NBA Finals for 1 year….as if last year at this exact time we werent watching Lakers-Celtics…

1 year later – billboards, no consultation of hiring Mike Brown, & worst of all – HE GETS SKIPPED IN THE JORDAN CONVERSATION FOR LEBRON?

how did kobe get skipped in the MJ convo and we went straight to Lebron?

      One word, MONEY

Nike is just waiting for Lebron to win a championship to turn him into the new big #1 commercial man for them, especially in markets like China where Kobe is the king because of the many championships he’s already won.

I used to play this game with everybody comparing them to Kobe (because im total Kobe fanboy [self-admitted] having really bloomed into a diehard basketball fan during his years) but ultimately it doesnt matter who’s the best, it matters who is the most exciting to watch.
Top 5 most exciting to watch right now: 1-Lebron, 2-Dwight Howard, 3-Derrick Rose, 4-Dirk, 5-Chris Paul

I base this list off of guys who normally have to do too much for their team because they dont have a good team with the exception being Lebron simply because there isnt any player who plays as good offensively and defensively as he does. Dwight because he plays both sides of the court too, I hate Derrick Rose and i never like watching the Bulls, but he’s a supreme talent and i respect him 100% and he is exciting, Dirk has the prettiest shot in the game, Chris Paul doesnt get enough respect in my book.

Kobe isnt on this list because Kobe isnt the young Kobe who used to run the floor like a Rose, Dirk, or Paul of today

The fact that you would put Derrick Rose over Dwayne Wade is just baffling. Rose WISHES he could be as great a player as Wade. Just with that omission I know you’re a fool. Wade is one of the most underrated players as soon as people start talking about other big names. The funny thing is that none of the guys on your list even have a championship, unlike Wade.

Man, some of you are totally upset behind this. I’m in AWE.

Why is everyone ragging on J.J and the Mavs? This might have his name on it but this was most likely done by some fan of his, Puerto Ricans are known for being extremely prideful ya know. And everyone seems to forget that this is still an advertisement for SPRITE, not for J.J or the mavs.

Barea, buy a layup, then talk.

Actually, Kobe spent time yesterday bringing some much needed attention to the plight of young people abandoned to the streets of Los Angeles. He’d rather be playing but at least today he was putting his vacation to good use. For those who will peg me a Kobe/Laker suck-up, let me save you the trouble. I grew up in Boston – during the 80’s.

The most surprising thing about this post is that it didn’t come from Matt Moore.
