How the Orlando Magic almost got Dwyane Wade

Doc Rivers played his college ball for Marquette. Dwyane Wade played his college ball for Marquette.

That connection led to Wade working out for the Orlando Magic, where Doc Rivers was coaching back in 2003.

Rivers was on ESPN New York radio with Mike Lupica and told a great story (via Sports Radio Interviews)

I will tell you a quick story. Dwyane came in to work out with us when I was coaching the Magic and he really shouldn’t have. I think we were the 15th pick or the 14th pick. He had no business coming. He just came because of the Marquette connection. We had a workout. We had Keith Bogans and a couple of other guys. He dominated that workout more than I have seen any player dominate a workout to a point where we were scrambling trying to make a trade to get him in the draft and move up. We felt a lot of people didn’t know it. We had a deal with the Miami Heat if their guy didn’t come up the pick was ours. Well when the pick came to Miami…and Dwyane Wade we thought that we had him because we didn’t know that Miami liked him and then they called us right before they were about to pick and they said ‘We’re sorry. We have our guy.’ And they picked Dwyane Wade.”

Damn, I just love draft stories.

Dwight Howard and Dwayne Wade. Wow, could have been pretty lethal. Not sure if it’s Big 3 lethal but it might have got them a championship.

no way the Magic would have landed the #1 pick the following year to draft Dwight if they had Wade already..

It’s always funny how fates of franchise’s hinge on how another team uses their pick and what is available to them.

T-Mac wouldn’t have liked another scorer on the team with him.

T-Mac had a couple good years and then became really average, if Dwayne had been on the same team as T-Mac one of the 2 would be putting up big numbers and the other would be what T-Mac is right now.

Didn’t like his own cuz, some dude named Vincent. Played for some college team named the Raptors.
