They’ve hired him as coach, not GM. He’s not going to arrange any trades, he’s going to coach the team. And if you take a look back at his track record as GM in Minnesota, you’ll see why he hasn’t held that job since then.

It’s an upgrade only if he has the influence to persuade All Star caliber players to come play for him. Their roster needs some real work to compete in the West. No one can win, with the current roster. If he can unload Yao and get a quality player in return, his tenure will be off to a good start.

It really is kind of comical how the NBA recycles the same guys over and over. McHale is on record as saying he never wanted to coach the T-Wolves and only did so because the ownership insisted. So, what’s changed since then?

Also note that it was his hand picked coaches he had to fire and players he had to work with. His strong suit is not the X’s and O’s that much is for sure.

Kevin McHale will do a good job, but I think a younger coach would be better for the long term…

He might help Scola to evolve his game to an all-star level. Otherwise, let’s see if Thabeet will actually become Mutombo Lite (I doubt it). It’s difficult to imagine the Rockets becoming a contender with the current roster, but let’s just give McHale a chance to prove himself.

As long as he doesn’t have approval over trades why not. Wait! Maybe he can get lucky and get Danny Ainge to trade Rondo for Yao Ming? Danny owes him one!
