It takes some work, but Australia can ask FIBA to allow a switch arguing that Irving never played for an adult US national team, FIBA will likely allow it if US give it is ok. The same process has happened before with Charlie Villanueva (Dominican Republic) and Roy Hibbert (Jamaica). To get an idea how easy it is, Hibbert played for US in 2007 Pan American games when he was 20 (older than Irving) in a tournment in which other teams send pros and FIBA stll allowed because the US team had only college players. Last summer, while the US national team was fighting lack of young centers, Hibbert was playing for Jamaica at Centrobasket. That said I doubt Irving can get it done to play this summer, but next years OIympics is an easy target.
