Garnett wanted out of Minnesota whereas Gasol wasn’t grousing about being in Memphis at the time. You still make a good point, however, because Stern at the time Garnett was traded wasn’t any fan of the T-Wolves and anything Stern can do to help his precious major TV markets (in this case Boston), at the expense of a small market, he’s all for.

that’s kind of interesting but any “rivalry” between these two very different players is long dead due to Shaq being too old and slow for anyone to care what he’s up to these days basketball-wise. I wonder what Bryant’s numbers would have been playing under the old defensive rules, modern scoring unfortunately always gets an asterisk

Stern didn’t force anyone’s hand in the great Pao Gasol trade rip-off; it was done with a “wink and a nod”, and a briefcase full of unmarked Benjamin’s being passed under the table. With the Knicks and Bulls in the toilet at that point in time, Stern desperately needed to keep the Lakers at the top of the league in order to placate the networks.

i cant think of a trade where equal value is returned for a superstar with the latest examples with melo and d. will. about the pau trade? fine…okay, the Lakers got a lot better after that trade. (though with marc gasol is coming into his own, the trade gets less lopsided). there were rumors memphis didn’t want to pay gasol big money due to financial difficulties..but who knows. not us. memphis did say the Laker’s offer was the best one. i don’t believe in a “mafiaso” conspiracy with stern forcing anyone’s hand as you stated.

Excellent post! The ABA was actually a BETTER league than the NBA in it’s heyday. Go ahead… look up who dominated the NBA All Star teams after the leagues merged… it was a bunch of former ABA players.

Sore subject; Gasol was a gift wrapped package from David Stern to the Lakers, because Stern wanted Kobe to stop grousing and hinting at wanting a trade. The “trade” that brought Gasol over from Memphis was a flat out joke, and I have no doubt that a lot of money went under the table to the financially strapped Memphis owners to keep their mouthes shut.

One of the best things in all of sport is to watch a super-hyped, over-exposed teams fan “gas bag” inflate to lofty levels and then watch it get pricked and send all the hot air rushing out come playoff time. New England Patriot gas bag fan has experienced that now three years in a row, and this year we’ll get to see that happen to both gas bag Laker fan and gas bag Heat fan come playoff time too! If Perkins is healthy come playoff time, the Lakers better pray that they don’t draw the Thunder for a 7 game series. The Heat are too dysfunctional and their kid coach too ill prepared to make a legit championship run (at least this season).’ Go Bulls! Go Thunder! Go Celtics! Go Spurs! … anybody please but the Heat and Lakers.

It would be cool to see Celts/Lake Show this year in finals if Shaq can get his act together. Just to see the rivalry play out in the finals one last time would be great theatre.

It wont hardly mean as much as winning ring#5 did over Shaq

Both these guys cherish one single prize more than any other, and thats the championship.

By the time Kobe is getting ready to pass up Shaq for this award he’ll probably have 2 rings on his hand more than Shaq does.

These 2 guys were the 2 most dominant forces on one team. It seemed the other team was secondary to the competition amongst each other and if both of them weren’t so hardheaded they’d have dominated the league another 3-5 years

This post infuriates me. This same fact was stated on ESPN as well, and it infuriated me then. When the statement is made that Kobe passed Moses Malone, it dismisses the ABA. The ABA, where Julius Erving started. Where the Iceman made his name. These HOFer’s get dismissed when you forget that the ABA was a professional league on par with the NBA.

For those wondering Kobe is 9th all-time in the ABA/NBA scoring list. Which is still very impressive and he most likely will be 2nd or possibly first all time, when his career ends, however please remember the ABA and the players that came before.

Dear Kobe….Dan Issel is next, then Shaq….THEN Moses.
