I live in OC and my unscientific survey is that 90% of the people who follow basketball are Lakers’s fans. 5% enjoy heartache and ridicule, so they follow the Clippers. The rest are fans of Boston or the Knicks. That’s about it.

The vast majority of people don’t care. There is too much to do here for them to care.

So many people claim to be Lakers fans and then they ask who that guy is when they show Gasol’s face on the TV. Or they are a chick and they only know Lamar as Mr. Khloe.

I’ve never encountered a Kings fan unless I was in the vicinity of Disneyland. You know they are not from around here because they keep saying “hella this, hella that”.

There will be a weird, unhygienic subgroup of people that will latch onto the Kings but they will be insignificant. Most OC “fans” are front runners who cheer on whichever local team is winning. Unfortunately for the Maloofs, the Kings are not known as winners.
