Bill Walton, ghost of Jerry Garcia will in fan’s half-court shot

Feb 10, 2011, 8:22 AM EDT

Like many teams, the Sacramento Kings run a promotion where a fan gets a chance at a half-court shot to win a bunch of money (or a trip or whatever). Wednesday night a Kings’ fan nailed it.

Why? Because Bill Walton was courtside and summoned the spirit of Jerry Garcia on Grateful Dead night at the Kings game. Well, that’s what it sounds like if you listen to the announcers (including Walton himself).

Personally, not a Jerry Garcia fan. Cherry Garcia? That works.

In early 1970 I saw the Dead @ the Fillmore West and the opening act was Miles Davis. It was obvious that The Dead couldn’t hold a candle to Miles Davis as musicians. I was in California for 2 months at that time and saw the Dead 4 times and really dug them but after I left California I never saw them again, never wanted to.

Walton, on the other hand, thinks of them as the all time cosmic-do-all-know-all-be-all band, which is his right.

The Dead were also almost certainly stoned and tripping at the time. Miles Davis was probably just drunk.

Grateful Dead night? Someone’s a marketing genius :)
