If the Lakers and the Knicks were to do a "blockbuster trade", both teams should take the opportunity to "clean house". The Lakers should make a clean break with the Phil Jackson era and send the players most associated with Jackson to the Knicks:

Kobe Bryant
Pau Gasol
Derek Fisher
Metta WordClass Crazy
Luke Walton

and take these players back in return:

Carmelo Anthony
Amar'e Stoudemire
Tyson Chandler
JR Rider

And maybe Baron Davis as well, so that Mike Brown has a PG to play anything other than the triangle that PJ's boys wanted to play.

The Lakers benefit by showing everyone who's the "Buss", and the Knicks benefit by getting something in return for Carmelo Anthony who may have overstayed his welcome with Knick Fandom.

The subtle message to the Knicks was my first thought until I read that Kobe and Phil were pissed. I don't think Chris Broussard just now all of a sudden got info on a trade that they are now saying was out there this summer. Instead of it being a message to the Knicks it could be Kobe or Phil sending a message to Jimmy Buss. Why would the Nuggets leak the info about Jim Buss vetoing the deal? I think Kobe just wants everyone to know that this time the Lakers are refusing to trade Bynum not for an aging point guard but for a 26 year old stud.

The bottom line is that this could be a deal and it would be a no-brainer for LA. Bynum is always hurt and the Lakers could always get a guy to fill the defense we'll lose. It may take a couple years, but Melo for Bynum is no-brainer for LA. The Knicks are offering thrash and rightfully so, since they can get him in off-season, depending on this Laker deal. The Knicks better re-up thier offer or Melo is coming to LA.
