David Berri apparently does not understand economics. The very existance of the NBA, who's rules are holding LeBron back, is the only reason LeBron has any value in the first place!

This can be argued. If the cap is lifted and a handfull of players make more than what most medium and small market teams could afford, the league would have 3 elite teams who have mega-stars on the roster (i.e. Los Angeles, New York, & Boston) and completely un-competative opponents. Not far from what there is now! This would cause teams to fold or taken over by the league (ala New Orleans). This would ultimately lead to no competition and no fan base except a few cities. The reason sponsors pay the money is for broad brand recognition. If the market for the game goes away, so does the demand that the sponsors are attracted too. LeBron, Kobe, and Durant would not be anything if there were not some average players to dunk on and make them look great.
