Dwight Howard can still block shots like nobody else

Dec 2, 2010, 1:04 PM EDT

The Orlando Magic have the best defense in the NBA.

They are giving up just 97.4 points per 100 possessions so far. That shouldn’t be a surprise, they have been at or near the top of the league for years. It is why they are contenders (if the offense will help out just a little bit).

And at the heart of that is Dwight Howard. Who is playing like the Defensive Player of the Year. Again. Go ahead and drive the lane on the Magic, this is what can happen.

Could you imagine the fast break points the Magic would have if Howard would just tip, or even palm, these shots.

Agreed… he needs to keep these blocks in bounds like the admiral used to do. Hard to have respect for flamboyant players like Dwight.

It’s true controlling blocks can be more effective at times for your team, but think about how many guys miss, rush, or pass up shots or hesitate simply because of the threat of Howard emphatically swatting the ball out of bounds. Nobody wants to get their shot sent 4 rows into the crowd. So there’s a positive and negative to the way Howard blocks shots.
