Stoudemire tells teammates to forget about ‘Melo

Amar’e Stoudemire went Rick Pitino yesterday.

He told his team that Carmelo Anthony is not walking through that door. Chris Paul is not walking through that door.

He used different words, but that was the sentiment. His sentiment may or may not be true a couple months from now, but is true about the season opener next week (Denver is taking their time right now, not making any moves; whether that is a good strategy is a different discussion). Stoudemire told his team they need to focus on the now, as quoted in the New York Post.

“At this point, it doesn’t make a difference,” Stoudemire said.

“The team we have, we got to keep in mind it’s all we got right now. We can’t really focus on the one that’s out there. You can’t really depend on anyone who’s not with us right now. The team we have, we’ve got to be ready to play.”

He’s right.

It’s one thing for the Knicks to do it; it is something else entirely for the Nuggets (something Kevin McHale talked about during a TNT conference call yesterday). It is hard for a team that knows its best player wants out. It’s especially hard when that is a pretty good team, a 50-win team if they stick together. How the Nuggets react will be interesting to see.

For the Knicks, Stoudemire knows that Pitino had it right.
