Nets’ Troy Murphy out indefinitely with back issue

Oct 8, 2010, 11:46 AM EDT

Troy Murphy was to be the veteran counterbalance to the raw energy of Derrick Favors at the four spot in New Jersey, bringing good shooting range, underrated rebounding and a solid presence.

The Nets will have to wait a while for that presence.

Murphy is out indefinitely due to a lower back strain and inflammation, according to a tweet from Al Iannazzone of the Bergen Record. An MRI confirmed the problem.

Murphy will not go with the team on its trip to Russia and China next week and will have a visit with the doctors again upon the team’s return. Murphy had missed the start of the Nets preseason due to a strained groin but was due to return for the trip.

This could also put a pause on any plans the Nets have to trade Derrick Favors, although there is little action on that front anyway.

24 hours since this list of Training Camp injuries came out yesterday morning, and at least 3 more guys (Murphy, Jeff Pendergraph, Delonte West) are hurt.
