Josh Smith has scared a lot of rims in his time, it seems only fair that one of them fought back.

The dynamic Atlanta Hawks forward will be out for a week after cutting his hand on a rim, tweeted Michael Cunningham of the Atlanta Journal Constitution. He said it happened in the preseason game against Memphis. We would rather believe it happened on one of his huge dunks.

This is the preseason, take the time, let it rest and heal. If these games mattered, you could bet he would be back faster.

How the heck do you cut your hand on the rim badly enough to keep you out for a week? Isn’t this a safety issue in many ways? First, no one knows what bloodborn pathogens some of these players might have in them. Secondly, with how athletic the NBA is, most that aren’t under 6’3″ or so can Dunk… Why would they guys want to risk cutting thier hand enough to miss a possible 3-5 games in a weeks time?
