LeBron James says race played role in backlash to his decision

Sep 29, 2010, 10:36 PM EST

Thumbnail image for lebron_decision.jpgDid race play a role in the backlash — both in the media and in the general public — to LeBron James’ decision to take his talents to South Beach?

LeBron James and his business partner and close friend Maverick Carter both said yes in an interview on CNN Wednesday night (hat tip to Jason Lloyd of the Beacon Journal, and we should note race was a very small part of this interview, discussed and everyone moved on).

“I think so at times. It’s always a race factor,” LeBron said as part of a segment that focused largely on Carter.

“It definitely played a role in some of the stuff coming out of the media, things that were written,” Carter said.

A lot of the backlash seemed to be focused less on the choice itself — outside of Cleveland, anyway — and more on what came off as an egotistical way to do it. But both Carter and James said that “The Decision” — the hour-long show on ESPN announcing his move to Miami — may have had something to do with that.

“The execution could’ve been a little better and I take some of blame for that,” Carter said.

But James noted that the event raised $3 million for the Boys & Girls Club and any “heat” he took was worth it.

There certainly has been a lot of LeBron hate. The numbers back up what James and Carter have said about race.

Among blacks, LeBron’s positive Q rating among dropped from 52 percent in January to 39 — however his negative Q rating barely changed, going from 14 percent to 15. Blacks seemed to change what they thought of him, but to a more neutral stance.

Among non-blacks, LeBron’s negative Q rating went from 24 percent to 44 after the decision.

Why different races reacted to the situation in very different ways would make an interesting study in race relations in America.

Reading much of the commentary here is pretty discouraging. It isn’t so much that it’s surprising to see all the hate. All the disgusting names that people are calling Lebron are to be expected. This is, after all, America, land of free speech, hate, and stupidity. It’s discouraging because so many of you are sleeping sheep. You follow any half-witted sheperd that decides to lead you around. So news flash, my moronic friends: Lebron has done nothing to deserve it. Nothing!! He hasn’t been accused of beating up his wife. He hasn’t been arrested for DUI. He hasn’t been discovered using drugs or steroids. He doesn’t run a dog fighting ring. So what has he done? Nothing but be a great basketball player, run a successful commercial marketing company, while employing the friends he grew up with, and bring northern Ohio millions of dollars. He’s become a pretty darn good TV personality. And, he decided to change teams. Totally his right, like everyone else in America. Can you blame him after the despicable things that Dan Gilbert said? I grew up in Cleveland. It’s a good place to leave. Haven’t looked back in the 40+ years since I left. When I lived there it was a racist city, Whites on the west side, Blacks on the east side. In grade school my mother was told that although I was academically gifted I could not go to the school for kids like me because I was Black and it was all White. Today 40% of the houses in Cleveland are boarded up, there’s no industry and no jobs. Can you blame Lebron for wanting to see something else for the first time in his young life?

All this noise about the Decision ESPN show is just more falseness. There were no highlight videos of Lebron. The show was mostly sports pundits sitting in front of the camera behind their podium… speculating. Lebron showed a great deal of humility in the way that the show was done and raised a lot of money of children. How much money have any of you raised? Look bozos, Lebron didn’t call Sports Illustrated when he was in high school. They called him!

No, Lebron has done nothing to deserve being persecuted by the media and hated by morons like the ones writing on this thread. You White boys are not even aware of the fact that you’re being baited by the media. Lebron didn’t bring up the race issue, the media did. He had to answer the question honestly and he did. Of course race is a factor. How could Lebron not answer that question honestly and still have the trust and respect of his friends, family, employees, fellow NBA players, supporters and lovers of the truth everywhere? The media distorts the facts and runs a headline that implys that Lebron brought it up and has a chip on his shoulder. This is the falseness that is the modern media. Lebron grew up Black in America. He knows race is always a factor. He doesn’t spend a lot of time worrying about it like some of you jerks on this thread do.

Of course there’s racism (and plain old jealousy) underlying all the hate being spewed, because Lebron is a millionaire Black man who does what he thinks is best for his career, his business, and the people he employs. So you call him arrogant. He doesn’t care what you say anymore than Bill Gates or any other businessman. And yeah, you hate him because he has physical powers that you can only dream of. This, more than the money or the self confidence is what really pisses you off. You boys can’t jump and Lebron is a prototype basketball player. You sit with your mouths open when you see him play. You can’t believe it.

But Lebron is not a product of Africa. There’s only been one African who was a great player in the NBA. Olajuwon. NO. Lebron is great because he is a Black American, a descendant of slaves who where genetically manipulated by confederate cracker slave owners for 400 years to be bigger, stronger and faster. These brutal men controlled mating in the slave quarters for the purpose of producing the superior slaves who are the ancestors of the athletes that now dominate professional sports. All the while these same cracker slave owners were sneaking out the back door forcing themselves on the same Black women that they called animals in public. So the irony is very apparent to those of us who are not sleeping sheep. You White boys are so ignorant you don’t even know your own history. So don’t blame Lebron. America was built on genocide, slavery and race. Racism is as American as apple pie and you morons writing this garbage (including the author of this inflammatory article) are proof positive of that.

really????really??? you cannot be serious? michael jordan & charles barkley disagreed with lebron’s decision to move to miami. they made a point of saying that publically!! I guess they are racist, cause lebron is black..LOL!
    STFU!
cleveland begged for him to stay…they would have given him any amount of money to stay..so STFU!

So the publicity stunt “The Decision” blows up in your face and now its racism?
    What a joke.
Is it also racism that Kevin Durant has become the face of whats right with the NBA? Is that racism too Lebron?

  9. Nick - Oct 1, 2010 at 8:52 AM

I notice that this story conveniently never made it on ESPN.com. What’s wrong? They can’t open him up to more criticism because he is their boy? (And I would ask that same question if he was a different race, as I don’t mean “boy” in the slave owner context. This shouldn’t even be explained but I have to do so because too many morons populate the Internet and the real world for that matter.)

  10. Nickel - Oct 1, 2010 at 10:22 AM

You are hilarious. I wonder if you even get that your comment is the clearly among the most racist on here. You actually said cracker. That just makes me laugh, because it’s so utterly ridiculous. Like we’re all still living in the 1900s and all the white people on here are plantation owners or some crap. like any of that is even relevant to this discussion.
What’s pissed off so many people, white and black, about Lebron’s comments is how ridiculous they are.
You can pipe all you want about how he had to answer the question honestly, but I think it’s pretty damn likely he knew what questions they would be asking as that’s pretty much industry standard for professional interviews. He certainly didn’t seem surprised by the question.
What’s galling about this is the RACIST assumption that any white person who has a problem with something a black person does is racist. I don’t care what color his skin is, he handled the whole thing in a lousy disrespectful way. But I don’t really care about that. However when he starts trying to blame people’s reactions on racism, that pisses me off. Because it’s a load of crap.

Lebron is doing a big diservice to the black community by using the race card in this instance. It reduced the credibility of a legit race issue when it occurs. Shame on you Lebron.

Playing the race card is a real negative and shows the immaturity of LeBron. He should absolutely be ashamed of himself. It was all about the Cleveland losing their best player and one of the best players in the NBA. Plus it had to do with the economic impact his leaving will have on downtown Cleveland. Race, no way LeBron, and you should apologize for bringing it up as well as the stupid one hour show on TV. Find another way to raise $3M for the B&G Club.

Racism is here everyone. Face it. How about the players in NHL or MLB? Why do I ask this? Because the double standard. Never would have been a big deal in these sports, if a star player takes off to another team. Yes, disappointed. But seriously all out hate for a man in the entire league. Who is LBJ? White collar criminal, who steals millions, and destroys investment and retirement funds. No. Just a young black man that is rich and takes care of his friends by giving them jobs. People in business hire friends. Nothing wrong with that. If, you lose with friends your problem. He leaves the team while an Free Agent, guys. Seriously now. Free Agent. All this outrage is the same way we have been programmed to think a young black player is either/or all a thug, gansta, hard to coach, problem in the locker room, aloof, etc. I have never heard a bad thing about a white player in a very long time. Even the steroids stuff in MLB has a black face to on it. Barry Bonds. They knew every one else was on it, but once the thought B. Bonds was on it. WOW. Look at the haters out. He will have his day in court, America. Hockey player beating each other up every day. But the violence is part of the sport. So off course it is OK to do this. Racist arenas the 5 or so black NHL players play in. How about the Black players drafted to the NFL and NBA? All ways a question about their thinking ability. U cant trust him to think. All the commentators say this. Black QB forget about it. They chase you down all day. Secretly plotting to do you in at ever turn. Every mistake is multiplied by 1000000. A QB like J Cutler or B. Farve throws numerous/millions of INT’s, but no it could not be their faults. No. It is the WR. But if Mcnabb or Vick. It is all their faults. And how Black players dont think. Every black college QB is a runner. What the Heck was Tebow? A good runner, terrible passer…….Black NBA player hounded for there demeanor. Seriously, when yor are really tall you have a different body language. So much to highlight, but not enogh time. Blacks players rise fast, and they love to see your down fall. Yes. some exceptions. MJ. But, when u stop throwing that ball, welcome to the viral hate we all really deal with all they. Example, getting a job. And providing for a family when u are the black applicant. Tough moving. Then these racist will black ball you to the poor house.

MJ. But, when u stop throwing that ball, welcome to the viral hate we all really deal with all they. Example, getting a job. And providing for a family when u are the black applicant. Tough moving. Then these racist will black ball you to the poor house.

I gotta agree with you on that one. I don’t believe for a second that race has a lot to do with James losing his beloved status as much as his ego and completely stupid decision. Here in Cleveland, he was dub “King James” and the Cavs was “His” team. He was the leader and the savior of this whole entire sports region! Yet that wasn’t enough for him and his crew. Heck, he could go to Miami everyday if he wanted to go that bad, even buy his own daggone plane. But give this up for what? A ring right now! He could have gotten a ring here, all the chump had to do was play ball in the Boston series and then it was on to Orlando. That really was what we Clevelanders and the basketball world fans were waiting on again. The big Show! Shaq and Howard. I am a Black American man and I can’t stand this guy any more. He had it all right here including the love of White folks galore. Now nobody refers to him as King, have you noticed. Guess he blames that on race too!!!

listen ya, why do we have to keep discussing it time-and-time again, LeBrat Lame is a coward who bails alright. It wasn’t enough of an honor to him that Cleveland made him the face and symbol of the franchise, so what if Peyton Manning or Tom Brady would have faced the same backlash had they done what he did to their team or franchise, however cause he’s one of the few black NBA players or athletes it’s totally about racism!
We as a country do this to all the famous black sports athletes you see… atleast thats the spin that Team Kiss Lebron’s Butt wants to put. Maverick Carter is there to lick clean Bron’s stinkin butt ppl whenever his filthy ass needs it, to lay the blame to show that its anybody’s but LeBrats fault. Carter has been and always will be LeBron’s bitch!!! that’s just the man that he is (along with the rest of LeBrat’s posse) So quit bashin these dudes!

Cleveland will not let LeBron light up the Q on his return to town. They will engage in some collusion of their own and fix the outcome of the game. Miami will win against the cave in Quickens Loan Arena. However, it will be the Cavs fans that dictate this. Before LeBron has the satisfaction of lighting up a career performance, he will be booed like never before. They decorum will be hostile, and LeBron and his teammates will win by forfeit as they are escorted in fear from the Q after being pelted by every object that can get thrown at a sporting event. This event will be a disgrace that will live in infamy just as the “Decision” did!

If you say anything negative about lebron or Obama, you are a racists,So What,if thats what I may be considered thats fine, because those who believe its all about coler are ignorant or just racist against white people. But both of them(Lebron and Obama) need to get better advise from somewhere

  21. Anonymous - Oct 2, 2010 at 11:10 AM

its not about saying something negative about Obama or James its about doing it both ways. Why wasn’t Brett Farve talked about and made a big deal of like lebron was when eli got drafted he refuse to go to san diego did anyone make a big deal out of it. The guy from Portland said he would not play for portland because of playing time where is media behind that. Thats when its about race is when you dont do it both ways and if your going to talk about black players make sure you make the white ones headline news also. And about Obama Bush was out last President that should be enough said on that one

Who and hell are you? What about your mouth and ideas that come out of it?

  23. Laker Fan - Oct 3, 2010 at 3:34 AM

Of course Bret Farve and President Bush have been ripped by the media and the public!!! This isn’t about race except when it’s used as cover for a failed media-hyped event that backfired. Lebron should be ashamed to use that tactic in the media. Further proof he just doesn’t get!
