Knicks deny tampering in Carmelo Anthony trade talks

Sep 29, 2010, 9:30 AM EDT

Thumbnail image for donnie_walsh.jpgA four-team trade deal that would have moved Carmelo Anthony to the New Jersey Nets fell apart, apparently for a few reasons. One of them was the Nuggets trying to add players to the deal to shed payroll and get below the luxury tax threshold.

But rumors surfaced that the Nuggets thought the Knicks might have tampered with the talks, encouraging Anthony through back channels not to sign any extension so he can sign with New York as a free agent next summer (right after the lockout).

Tuesday the Knicks Donnie Walsh denied that. Marc Berman of the New York Post had the quotes.

“We weren’t [tampering],’ ” Walsh said. “Pretty quickly, we didn’t think they saw a trade with us. We haven’t been that involved in it since. I’ve never heard that before.

“We didn’t do it,” Walsh added. “This is the first I’ve heard of it and I’ve talked to their general manager a couple of times.”

The Knicks leave for games in Europe and Anthony will not be with them. Well, Carmelo Anthony — but Anthony Randolph will. And he may be as big a key to their future.

GM’s tamper all the time. It comes with the job and, back channel or front, they all do it. I don’t see Melo lasting out the season in Denver, which would deliver him to MSG without giving up Gallo, Felton, and some draft picks they don’t have anyway. It would be a dream scenario for the Knickerbockers, but Melo staying in Denver for the whole season is a real stretch. Denver management shot themselves in the foot, renegging on the Nets deal, which would have yielded a better personnel swap than they’ll get elsewhere. On the Knicks front, I like what Donnie has put together. This team is young, long, and very athletic – three adjectives that have been missing in Knicksville for many a year. Everyone is singing Randolph’s praises, but, when all is said and done, Mozgov might very well prove to be the most valuable addition. I’m thinking 44 wins, and a backdoor into the playoffs.

They(GM’s)all tamper all the time. Some are so sophesticated and cunning, that it’ll take the feds to unravel their schemes. It’s all part of modern sports.Let’s not kid ourselves.

If your the Knicks why not tamper? The downside is a fine of course, maybe draft picks, but the upside is persuading Anthony to come to NY without having to give up anything in a trade.
Look at Eddy Curry, they are used to giving up draft picks and lots of money and getting nothing in return

Take whatever the NY Post says with a grain of salt. They’re just like one of those magazines you see at the siper market. They’ve been called out a few times for printing out right lies…If they did tamper,I upset they got caught.
