Kobe inspired Boston to go get Shaq… and stop pretending that feud is marketing

Sep 20, 2010, 12:11 PM EDT

Thumbnail image for Shaq_Boston.jpgDid anybody really buy the whole “Shaq v. Kobe” feud was marketing. Oh, Shaquille O’Neal is smart enough to know how to make these things marketable, but like ancient myths the elaborate stories built up around some kernel of truth.

Then when Kobe got ring number five last June and was quick to say he was “one ahead of Shaq” you could feel how much he enjoyed that.

That comment also sparked the Celtics, according to the Boston Globe (as found by Trey Kerby at Ball Don’t Lie)

“The minute I heard Kobe [Bryant] say he had one more ring than Shaq, I said to Danny [Ainge], ‘Let’s go get Shaq,’ and it happened,” said [Celtics primary owner Wyc] Grousbeck.

“This is a very, very proud bunch of guys, the champions from ’08. And now with Jermaine and Shaq and Delonte, who haven’t been champions with us, this could be a good group. We’ve got huge challenges but we reloaded this summer. We really want banner No. 18.”

How much the aging Shaq and his defensive freelancing really helps the Celtics remains to be seen. He (and Jermaine O’Neal) provides some dept and offense along the front line, if everyone can stay healthy and not regress too much.

McDaddy, you mean winning? because you should check that the Lakers franchise has been the most successful of the NBA since the 80’s . How many titles have you won since the 80’s?. We are on course to 3 peat. can your team say that? don’t think so! You know what happens if you guys fail to make the finals? Back to the growing pains of dismantling and REBUILDING! Cheers!

  2. McDaddy - Sep 21, 2010 at 1:55 PM

Actually Chicago is the most sucessful franchise since the 1980s with six titles. I will give you all credit. The Lakers are a great organization. Jerry Buss has been a great owner. But Kobe is not getting any younger either Sally boy. You guys had better hope
there is another hall of famer waiting in the wings to become a Laker. Really think Gasol is going to take over when Kobe starts “getting old” in a few years?

  3. McDaddy - Sep 21, 2010 at 2:25 PM

Maybe you guys should take down the three championship banners
that Shaq helped the Lakers win Al? Oh, and Al, in the 12 finals
played between Boston and L.A. – guess who has won 9 of those series? Not to mention that if L.A. had not wussed out in 1986 we would have easily swept Magic and company. And if Len Bias had not
died, we would have kicked your ass in 1987 too. Hate to disturb
your eternal rest with those facts (Boston 9 to L.A.’s 3).
    R.I.P Al.

McDaddy, please get your math right. Since the 80’s the Lakers have been the most successful franchise in the NBA with 10 titles and counting. 5 with Magic, 3 with Shaq and Kobe, and 2 with Kobe and Gasol. It’s true Kobe has about 3 years of competitive juice left in the tank. Your right we do have an awesome owner; and I hope that in 3 or 4 years Durant will see the light and wear purple and Gold. ( Just dreaming I know ). Nonetheless I do really hope that the C’s and the purple and Gold do it again. We’re all realistic here. I think that Shaq will help tremendously for about 20 minutes of good hard action. The big guy can still get it done.

    Stop hating on shaq ppl!
He isnt the same as he was few years ago but thats not what celtics are paying for… they are paying for 15-25 minute a game back up… and even at this age he is still better than a lot of people playing… i thought he did well in series against celtics last year (if you dont compare him to his past performance)…

It’s great to hear flaker fans bumping their chests like this.
    Remember some things:
    a) you, the Minnesota/Los Angeles Lakers, have 15 NBA championships. The 1949 title was BAA, not NBA.
    b) if the refs act this year like last season, you will not only win your 16th banner, but I wouldn’t be surprised if Co-b was handed the Nobel Prize also. He’d deserve the Nobel as much as the finals MVP (Gasol was robbed again)
    c) I feel for the guy, but Bynum will never be healthier. So, stop talking about Perkins vs. Bynum. Andrew’s potential is huge, but his knees are fragile. It took a cheap shot by Co-b for Perk to get injured. Co-b should’ve been banned from game 7, although it wouldn’t hurt Lakers chances to win, he just bricked and fouled (without being called) all game.
    d) I had a lot of respect for the showtime Lakers, and even for the Shaq Lakers. I dislike Co-b the same way I disliked Byron Scott, all hype, no real brains. Co-b has the skills, just not the IQ to play like an All-time great. Today’s Lakers have Gasol (the most skilled big in the league) and good perimeter defense in Fish and Artest. Co-b is just the one-on-one highlight type of player ESPN likes to showcase. You could put Lebron in the Lakers and they would be even better.
    e) Respect Shaq, he’s played for your team and was the reason for 3 of your 15 titles.
    f) Respect the Celtics. They have been through a lot of things that no franchise (except for the Clippers or the Blazers) in the NBA has had to bear. Big injuries to Bird, McHale, Walton, death of Len Bias (he could have been better than Jordan), the Reggie Lewis death… I hope it won’t happen to any franchise again, but if it happened to the Lakers, they would have moved (again) and probably you will be rooting for the Las Vegas Lakers, or the Kansas City Lakers.
    g) Stern loves you… but Stern love won’t last forever, Kevin Durant is the new face of the NBA. LeQueen seems to be the new villain, and the Lakers and Celtics are the old. Stern’s hate, though, lasts forever; he didn’t allow the Celtics to replace Reggie Lewis when he passed away. And the whole 2010 playoffs, refs have made the Celtics pay for Stern’s hate.
    h) remember, you have 15, and that’s great. But the Celtics have 17, and they’re on the way to #18.
    Peace

If Shaq’s number isn’t retired (I guess they will, they are a pro organization), he wouldn’t be the first great Laker to be disrespected.
George Mikan, aka “Mr. Basketball”, or Vern Mikkelsen didn’t have their numbers retired, although the flaker fans count on their NBA titles and even their 1949 BAA title.
And Shaq wouldn’t be the first player to win a ring with the Lakers early in his career, just to finish winning back-to-back championships with the Celtics. Clyde Lovellette did it. Shaq might do it to.
    Respect history

  8. KW - Sep 22, 2010 at 1:58 AM

Shaq tries to minimize Kobe’s accomplishments by saying he helped Kobe get 3 of his 5 rings. Well then, I guess that means that Kobe helped Shaq get 3 of his 4 rings. Just sayin…

  9. KW - Sep 22, 2010 at 2:06 AM

Celtic fans have the nerve to talk about losing Perkins for Game 7, as if HE was the reason they lost. Be happy that Andrew Bynum, who still played with great heart on one leg, wasn’t 100% – otherwise, no way Boston lasts until Game 7.

  10. KW - Sep 22, 2010 at 2:21 AM

    @aporel#18
Maybe if Shaq didn’t cuss out Jerry Buss in the middle of a preseason game for not offering him a contract extension, maybe, just maybe Shaq’s Laker jersey would get retired. I suppose if Larry Bird publicly cussed out Red Auerbach (which of course, he has too much class to ever actually do), you think Red would’ve been rushing to retire his jersey? Difference is, Shaq is not and never has been a ‘classy’ individual.
When you hate on Byron Scott as “all hype, no brains”, it truly reminds me that whiny punk Danny Ain’t, er, Ainge.
The rest of your comments are so beyond delusional, typical for many of you myopic Celtic ‘fans’.

  11. McDaddy - Sep 22, 2010 at 1:24 PM

I thought Bynum played on one leg all the time?
Don’t chastise us for making excuses about Perkins not
playing game 7 and then make excuses about “Broke Knee Bynum”.
That makes you a hypocrite. Nothing worse than a know nothing,
    whining hypocrite. Get stuffed.

Keep going Sal! well said! I love it!!!
