Marcus Camby would give Greg Oden some advice, if he was around at all

Sep 19, 2010, 10:58 AM EDT

Marcus Camby is the starting center for the Portland Trail Blazers. He’s a veteran who was once underrated, then overrated, and then swung back around to underrated. He was a huge part of the Blazers ability to stay in the playoffs despite the massive number of injuries they sustained. He brought physical play and awareness to a team that needed it.

So he’s got a lot he can share with Greg Oden, who many consider to be the most important element of the Blazers’ championship hopes. And he would be totally willing to share that with Oden. If, you know, the kid was around at all. Blazers Edge caught up with Camby recently, and he says he hasn’t really seen the kid during his time with the Blazers… at all.

“I haven’t really seen him all summer, he hasn’t really been around the
team since I’ve been around the team, the second half of the season,”
Camby admitted. “Hopefully when he comes back he comes back healthy. I
would just tell him to just keep working hard. It’s a tough injury to
come back from. We have a great training staff up there in Portland.
He’s definitely a big part of what we hope to do around there in
Portland.”

Right. Well, Camby hasn’t been there that long, really. Just February. So, seven months. Okay, that’s kind of a hard time, but Camby doesn’t say he’s been absent the whole time, just mostly.

At some point, there needs to be some emphasis put on the fact that Oden maintains a distance from Portland. He can’t get around following surgery. That’s completely understandable. But there still hasn’t been that outstanding effort to ingrain himself with Portland as a culture and as a team.

Oden may be the future of the Blazers, but he can’t be dragged there kicking and screaming if that’s going to happen.

Oden is at the training facility with most of the team that showed up a month before camp starts…maybe Camby could show up there…

Not only is he at precamp with the rest of the team, he spent a good deal of the summer working with the Blazer trainers and staff. Mr Moore seems to take an obscure statement by one player and develop an entire story around it – whether or not it has any truth to it.

I almost snorted out of my nose when i read “blazers championship hopes. LOL

Yeah, that sounds like some weak, sensational writing to me. That doesn’t even seem like Camby was being negative, but rather stating a fact, and Moore wrote context into it. Back that crap up, guy.

What do people want? Oden is from Indiana, not Portland. A lot of players go back to their home town in the offseason. I agree with TimE that the writer is trying to stir up a controversy that doesn’t exist. Aldridge hasn’t been around, and hasn’t tried to ingratiate himself in Portland. Neither has Miller, or Batum, or Fernandez, or Bayless, or ….

since camby is in spain right now he probably isn’t seeing greg oden around anywhere because oden is in tualatin Oregon. Great story.

This is total bs. This “journalist” is obviously too lazy to research his own stories and is instead chooses to purposefully misconstrue statements he found surfing the Internet. Bravo.

Exactly where could he have researched it? Speaking of a lack of available sources, where do you get your information that Oden has been working out every day for a month in Portland? And that he spent a lot of days in Indiana with a trainer? Can you give those dates? You don’t really know anything, do you? You just have a couple of rumors.
Even when Oden is supposedly homebased in Portland, he’s really travelling all over the country, doing events. He’s entering his contract year, his fourth year, and arriving so out of shape that by the start of camp next week, he won’t be playing 3 on 3 yet. He’s had almost a year to recover from what should taken 3-4 months. We were told all season that they were aiming to have him play in the playoffs, but the plan was called off days before they started. 6 months later he’s in worse shape, not better. How many years of a free pass without scrutiny does he get? Good article, thanks.

Spookie, all that information you are questioning can be found on the Blazers Edge site. It is largely common knowledge for fanatics who follow the team every day — and there are many. That is why most everyone posting is questioning the author in the same manner.
