Pat Riley fires back at Charles Barkley, Stan Van Gundy and all you Heat haters

He’s spent the last two months listening to people criticize his players and their wanting to play on one team and he’s had it. Not as much with the media and bloggers — although I have yet to receive a bouquet of roses — but with the people in the league.

And in an animated interview with Ira Winderman of the Sun Sentinel, Riley fired back. Starting with Charles Barkley, who called LeBron’s one-hour The Decision special a “punk move.”

“Charles Barkley, to me, went way over the top,” Riley said. “I think Charles is probably the only guy in the league that can get away with what he gets away with.

“Calling these guys a bunch of punks is a personal attack. LeBron isn’t that. Dwyane is not, and neither is Chris.”

Then there was former Heat coach Stan Van Gundy — the guy Riley kicked to the curb to pilot the Shaq and Wade train — who wondered why name players wanted to be Wade’s “lap dog.”

“Stan’s out there making comments about Chris Bosh being a lap dog to Dwyane Wade,” Riley said. “I don’t know what happened to some of these guys along the way.”

Riley — like a lot of us, really — have kind of reached the end of the talking point of the summer and want to get to the playing games point of the summer. He knows his team has high expectations and has been labeled the enemy in a lot of quarters, and he’s fine with that.

“I don’t think there’s anything wrong in having the great anticipation. And I think that’s one of the keys to developing tremendous enthusiasm. The scarlet letter has been placed on their back for some reason. These guys are going to have to develop a resolve second to none maybe in the history of the NBA…

“Now we’ve got to go out on the court and prove it,” he said. “I don’t look back in regret at what anybody says about us.”

Pat Riley is the bigegst fraud in the NBA. For all his motivational speaking, he QUIT on the Heat after they lost a bunch of key players to free agency and otherwise (Zo’s kindey condition, etc.), right before the ’03-’04 season to supposedly focus on his duties as GM (which oddly didn’t seem to matter when Riley thought he could get credit for another title run the year before).
Then, when they traded for Shaq in ’05, suddenly he saw that he could again be on the sidelines when he thought a title might again be within reach (which it was), abd he unceremoniously dismissed Stan Van (who suppoedly resigned to spend more time with his family) even though Stan Van had guided the team surprisingly well through a couple lean seasons.
What has Riley ever done with a less than star-studded lineup? Nothing. Couldn’t win squat with the Knicks. He’s a bum and a joke and a fraud…. Why we continue to listen to what this guy has to say and why NBA types want to cannonize him, is beyond me.

Your all PUNKS! Isn’t there anything you can do but spend time on this nonsense.

  11. sir john - Sep 10, 2010 at 4:16 PM

    You’re all Punks!

  12. nresq - Sep 10, 2010 at 4:23 PM

    Uh, Eric:
There are LOTS of reason to dislike Riley, but he ain’t no fraud. He’s got LOTS of rings, and LOTS of Finals appearances. The fact he didn’t win with the Knicks in the ’90′s doesn’t diminish the fact he got the team there. And no one thought the Heat was going to win the title in ’05. So Riley’s reputation AS A COACH is pretty secure.
Having said that, he definitely treated Van Gundy badly. But this is the NBA; Van Gundy landed in a great situation in Orlando, and now he gets to hear the smack talk from those fans!

  13. eugene - Sep 10, 2010 at 4:28 PM

Soooo, if we’re all punks, Pat is a great coach, because he’s definitely better than the rest of us. Gotta run, have other nonsense to deal with.

  14. nresq - Sep 10, 2010 at 4:30 PM

This is the same BS people are always saying about Phil Jackson: He can’t win without stars, his star is the “real” coach, blah, blah. THIS JUST IN: Nobody wins titles in the NBA without stars, including one central figure who is driven more than the stars on the other teams. If its all so easy, how come Jackson and Riley got so many rings and Finals appearances and most other coaches don’t?
Also, much respect to Pop in San Antonio.

  18. Dave - Sep 10, 2010 at 4:59 PM

I stopped reading your article after BIGHTING. There can’t be anything intelligent in your article if you make a spelling error like that in the 1ST sentence of your article.

  19. Present - Sep 10, 2010 at 5:11 PM

BIGHTING??? Kurt, buddy, you need a refund on your college education boy!

TJ, that is so very, very clever of you to use words in such a creative, ORIGINAL way. You have advanced the discourse of this discussion and entertained us all in the process. THANK YOU!! ;-)

A “bight” is a loop in a line that can be dangerous if you are working on the deck of a ship. It can trap you and carry you overboard to your death.

I’m a Lakers fan from back when Jerry West, Elgian Baylor and what’s his name…oh yeah…Wilt Chamberlain the guy who says he’s slept with 3000 women (still trying to do the math on that one). Anyway where was the stink then or the years of Magic, Worthy and Jabbar? Who says one team can’t try to buy championships? Red Aurbach had done it for years
