Shaq says Cleveland was selfish, unlike Boston

Sep 4, 2010, 3:32 PM EDT

Thumbnail image for shaq_o'neal.jpgIt’s been one of those questions about this season’s Boston Celtics: Will the selfless chemistry that defined this team remain the same with Shaquille O’Neal and Jermaine O’Neal and a full year of Nate Robinson?

Probably, the leadership at the top of the big three will set the tone. And in case you were worried, Shaq is down with it. He’s said before he’s ready to be a role player and he reiterated it to the New Orleans Times-Picayune.

He also said that part of the problem in Cleveland was the lack of selflessness.

“I like that (the Celtics) play together and nobody really worries about shots,” O’Neal said. “When I was with Cleveland, guys who couldn’t even play were worried about shots. Why was Mo (Williams) taking 15 shots, and I’m only taking four? If LeBron takes 20 shots, that’s cool.

Just a little more evidence that in the push to build a team around LeBron in Cleveland they never really passed chemistry.

So Shaq is complaining about how many shots he was getting, but he’s glad he’s on a team that doesn’t complain about how many shots they are getting…great fit

More like the Celtics don’t care if he doesn’t get any shots. Seriously, he was getting paid 20 million dollars, and he was, at best, the fifth best player on that Cavs team (LeBron, Jamison, Williams and Vareajo).
Shaq did this to piss off LeBron and Kobe. This has been his move his entire career. I’ve never seen a pro player be such a front-runner and running coward at the same time. He got whipped in the Finals, then ran to LA. He got shipped to Miami, then quit right after winning a title. He ran to the Suns right after the Lakers got Gasol, but couldn’t get them past the Spurs. Then, after failing to make the playoffs, he ran to Cleveland, got beat by the Celtics, then instead of retiring like he should, ran to Boston. It’s unbelievable.

So Shaq hasn’t yet left a team on bad terms yet. How many is that? Magic, Lakers, Heat, Phoenix, Cleveland? Does anyone really think the Kobe/Shaq feud is Kobe’s fault now? Give me a freaking break. It’s mind-blowing how this guy can’t keep his mouth shut.

They do choreography before every game and after every time out, but then they lost because they don’t have chemistry?

  5. luis - Sep 4, 2010 at 6:41 PM

Why does Shaq always get away with this! He talks bad about every team he leaves and never gets crushed for it. He such a jerk. I hope he blows his knee out already. He is just such an A-hole

Shaq is an entertainer and making his team more relevant. Everyone had written off the Celtics as a distant 2nd or 3rd in the East after the Heats moves, especially when the Celts picked up JO, but now they have Shaq and everyone is talking about how the Celts are teh veteran team with “a couple left in them”, how they are a much better front court ,so that is why they will beat the Heat. It is not just basketball, it is sports entertaiment. The media, the fans, etc eats it up and now the Celtics are just as big a draw as the Heat(well maybe a bit less, cause who doesn’t want to see Wade, Lebron ,Bosh and the gang?).
Can’t wait to see Carmelo and CP running the Brooklyn franchise in two years…

  7. J - Sep 4, 2010 at 10:18 PM

This guy Shaq has dissed most of his former teams: the magic, lakers, heat and now the cavs (I’ve never heard about him publicly dissing the suns after being traded to the cavs). Watch what happens if he doesn’t win a ring with boston, it’s dissing time for Shaq.
Shaq had his time at the top but it’s time for him to retire. It’s like he can’t live without the spotlight. The more he talks the more people might start to think maybe Kobe, Penny, D-Wade or any former teammate were not the main problem but Shaq himself.

    SHAQ, SHUT THE !@#$%^& UP!!!!!!!!

  11. will - Sep 5, 2010 at 5:12 AM

First off, read the quote, “I like that they play together and nobody really worries about shots, ” O’Neal said. “When I was with Cleveland, guys who couldn’t even play were worried about shots. Why was Mo (Williams) taking 15 shots, and I’m only taking four? If LeBron takes 20 shots, that’s cool.”
Shaq says, “guys who couldn’t even play were worried about shots.” Now unless Shaq is implying that he, himself can’t play, he was obviously referring to what he heard others complaining about (the ones who couldn’t even play).

and u r just a very ignorant cracker

  14. Turk - Sep 5, 2010 at 2:02 PM

Wossies! always talk about the team after there gone. But don’t have enough man balls to talk to the team when they r apart of the team. That’s the difference between Men & Wossies Shaq-a-licious.

    True!

  16. Stand up for SHAQ` - Sep 6, 2010 at 9:12 AM

When you really look at it SHAQ is the only one that tells it like it is, that is why he gets away with it. The whole Koeb thing, talk about getting away with something…when did Shaq rape some one and get away with it…and talk about hate, look at what Clev did just because Lebron chose another team (for less money), talk about classless. In reality all of these guys are not worth the money they are being paid, it’s time to stop the whining all the way around and get back to the true sport of playing ball.

  17. jblakers42 - Sep 6, 2010 at 1:04 PM

Shaq does it again, rips on a team when he bails out on them, after failing to win one for “the king”…
this ain’t nothing new……MO WILLIAMS wasn’t the problem
that’s why he won’t win one in Boston
KOBE will win his 6th ring, tying him w/ALPHA AND OMEGA of the NBA: MICHAEL JORDAN…..
