Wade on LeBron: `He didn't quit.''

Jul 15, 2010, 9:32 PM EST

Thumbnail image for d-wade-king-james.jpgDwyane Wade already has LeBron’s back.

“He’s not a quitter,” Wade said. “He didn’t quit.”

That’s what Wade told the AP Thursday, referring to Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert’s post-decision rant about LeBron James, saying he quit in the Celtics playoffs series. Wade will have none of hat.

“LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Kobe Bryant, guys like that understand what Boston’s defense was about,” Wade said. “Their defense was built on not letting one player beat them. You either settle for the outside shot or you pass to your teammates. LeBron had one bad game in the playoffs. Other than that, he did what he could do with the defense all watching him.”

Yes, Wade just referred to himself in the third person, but we’re going to let that go for now. And we’re not going to get into the debate about if LeBron quit of not. Okay, yes we are — he didn’t. And while he may have had hopes of the SuperFriends getting together in Miami at that point he was not going to tank a series to make it happen. Cleveland lost because Boston had matchup advantages and executed better.

Wade there is doing what a leader should do — get your teammates back. And Wade could be the real leader on this team: His city and he has the ring. What’s more, he is more of a killer than the other two. He has that fire. He wants another chip like competitor who has tasted success. And we’ve seen before he can drag a team with him.

okay where was kobe’s “killer instict from ’04-’06″? he was put in a lebron like situation when he lost his supporting cast which was….SCORING A TON OF POINTS AND LOSING GAMES! Kobe aint s**t without a supporting cast! or do you all only watch him play when he has a squad? EXACTLY! Kobe has a “killer insticnt” when he has a supporting cast! other than that, He’s no better than LeBron. And he knows that which is why I apllaud him for putting Jerry Buss’ ass on a hot seat to get more talent in LA WHICH THEY DID! Oh but NO! u damn hypocrites get amnesia when that issue comes about! U dont remember when Kobe was about to Dash on LAs ass if they had stayed in a Cleveland like state, by u alls standards….wouldnt that make him a quitter too? think about ALL the facts while you’re riding his nutsack! Because Kobe has had WAY more bad play-off games than lebron…..talk about “Killer Instinct”…..I hate to compare the two because this debate is endless! Like I said, I applaud Kobe for crying like a bitch to get what he wanted, had he not done that you’d be sitting here saying the SAME thing about him…..
And Aint no idiots over here DIRK!!!

That’s an idiot’s position to compare kobe’s teams of ’04-’06 to lebron’s the last couple of years. They had the best record in the league both years. As good as Lebron has been (and he has), they do not have the best record without a good TEAM. It’s only after the fact that revisionists claim that the team was junk, when a couple weeks earlier, they were a lock as favorites to win the title.

Your argument that LeBron was outmatched against the Celtics doesn’t hold much water. Was he outmatched in 2009 against the Magic as well? No team has two 60-win seasons without being VERY good.
LeBron should’ve given Cleveland another chance. They still had all the pieces there and added another key piece in a head coach, Byron Scott, which can make all the difference between winning and losing. Just ask Chicago and LA pre-Phil Jackson. Those teams didn’t change their rosters much yet they were able to win with Phil as their coach.
Mike Brown was a horrible coach and continued to be outcoached in the playoffs, which is the main reason why Cleveland lost in the playoffs the last 2 seasons.

COULD NOT HAVE SAID IT BETTER .. HE KNEW FOR A LONG TIME HE WAS BOLTING TO MIAMI LOOK AT THE TAPE AND SEE HOW FAST HE TAKES THE CLEVELAND JERSEY OFF .. ITS ALL COMING OUT AND AS HE TOLD MILLER A LONG TIME AGO LEBRON SAID ITS A DONE DEAL HE WILL BE PLAYING WITH WADE AND BOSH . READ BRYAN GUMBELS REMARKS ON HBO SPORTS HE SAID IT BEST SINCE WHEN IS A STAR MEASURED BY A RING !!!

  6. KCB - Jul 16, 2010 at 7:15 AM

Even if he didn’t quit…he is no Mike Jordon, and he was right to change numbers. He needs to be on a team with real leaders. The look on his face when Miami wins the title will reveal it all, and he will realize Gilbert was right……….You can’t get to Heavan without dying first…..

  7. faith - Jul 16, 2010 at 8:29 AM

My questions is how did they have the best record in the NBA two years in a row it he had no supporting cast? LaBron didn’t care as simple as that, if he was the king he did not play like one he played more like the queen. He show no respect to the owner or his teammates so he will never be a true super star.

  8. Anonymous - Jul 16, 2010 at 8:34 AM

HATE TO TELL YOU KCB WHEN LEBRON WINS THE RING IT WILL BE A SHALLOW VICTORY . HE GREW UP IN THE CLE ARE PLAYED SEVEN YEARS IN CLE AND PROMISED TO WIN A TITLE FOR CLE . THEY HAD THE BEST RECORD IN THE NBA SO I DONT GET ALL THIS TALK HE HAD NO SUPPORTING CAST. HE BOLTED CUZ DELONTE WEST WAS SCREWING HIS MOTHER AND NOBODY TOLD HIM ..DAN GILBERT GAVE THIS GUY EVERYTHING AND PAID HIM MORE THAN 100 MILLION DOLLARS …. DO YOU THINK DAN DESERVES SOME RESPECT???

  9. Ms. Wade - Jul 16, 2010 at 9:25 AM

Of course Wade had to say that now; he is officially LeBron’s bitch. So Wade has to say that or LeBron won’t give him the good lovin’ he wants.
LeBron and Wade are both little bitches.

  10. Jim - Jul 16, 2010 at 10:11 AM

This isn’t about Lebrons “stats” the past seven years, about his need to carry a team. It’s all about his play in a pivotal game 5. Anyone who has actually watched him play more than a few times knows something was off in that game. He looked disinterested, lax, and completely out of synch. That is the first time in memory he looked like that in a playoff game. If you don’t believe he quit, then fine. Instead of saying what he didn’t do, explain what happened.
The BS about Boston’s defense is laughable. They did not change up the scheme for game 5. It was the exact defense Lebron faced in the 4 games prior. Yet for some reason he stopped attacking the rim, became lazy with the ball, and just looked out of it.

  11. Jim - Jul 16, 2010 at 10:13 AM

He did NOT have a triple double in game 5. He did in game 6. In game 5 he shot 3-14 from the field.

You might want to consider proof reading before you post!

  13. Rudolf - Jul 16, 2010 at 10:27 AM

Quit, choked, rolled over…showed he’s not a closer, whatever. That’s definitely what he did vs. Celtics. He obviously knows he doesn’t have what it takes to win championship like the true legends, so he’s running to Wade to win some rings for him. I really used to like Lebron, but that was the most cruel and disrespectful single act in sports history the way he stuck it to his own home town. What a fool. He went from most loved to most disliked athlete in America. He will win rings, but it’s the easy way out. He will never be remembered as a true great player now.

  14. bismuth - Jul 16, 2010 at 11:43 AM

When Kobe lose, you just know he gave everything he’s got. That’s the difference! He will shoot 3/30 but he will keep on trying. It feels good to be Kobe’s supporter because by june you know u’ll be watching basketball.

  15. pjmjfan - Jul 16, 2010 at 12:23 PM

Hat’s off to Kurt Helin for another stupid story. Why did I read it then? They’re funny….but for all the wrong reasons. Indeed, Kurt is right about one thing. Wade did exactly what he is expected to and should do as the leader of the Heat. (yes, he is and will continue be the leader) He stood up for his new teammate. That doesn’t change the FACT that Lebron’s lack of focus and effort in game 5 was of obvious. The announcers noticed it, the media had a hay-day with it, and basketball fans were appalled by it as they (we) couldn’t believe our eyes that Lebron appeared to be giving up. I’m not a Lebron hater….I’m disappointed, but definitely not a hater. It has to be a relief to Lebron that the expectation is now on a team, instead of just him. Frankly, that’s why I’m disappointed, but it’s who Lebron is. Some of us fans are coming to accept that. In time, I’m confident and happy for him that he’ll get his ring(s) in Miami, but I had hoped he would earn them as the living legend and leader he has been marketed to be.

  16. Hoops McCann - Jul 16, 2010 at 12:24 PM

JD got it exactly right in post #29. The Cavs got outcoached by Rivers, and by Van Gundy in 2009. Dan Gilbert should have brought in B Scott for the 2010 season. I knew even when LBJ carried the Cavs to the Finals when they beat Detroit that M Brown was not a championship coach and that LBJ just did it singlehandedly. No strategy against Detroit, the Spurs, Orlando or Boston this year.
Why does Phil Jackson have an undefeated playoff series record when he wins the first game? Because he makes adjustments throughout the series that give the Lakers (and Chicago) more of an edge every game they play against the same team. That stat of Phils is one of the most incredible stats in NBA history and tells the whole story about how truly great a coach he is.

  17. Jimee Johnnson - Jul 16, 2010 at 1:09 PM

Yours is an excellent comment, not some whining hate-drivel. Thanks.

  18. JBP - Jul 16, 2010 at 1:54 PM

We know DWade, he didn’t quit, he just gave up….Does that make you feel better. Wait until your team is getting the s— kciked out of them and see where you can find LBJ, standing behind you hoping you’ll take over. Plain and simple, he’s a quitter.

  19. Nelson - Jul 16, 2010 at 3:00 PM

WOW!!! What a bunch of HATERS !!! If King James came to your team, you guys wouldn’t be writing all this garbage. The Miami Heat train is about to leave the station. For all you HATERS last call your gonna miss the ride.

  20. Cordae - Jul 16, 2010 at 5:40 PM

    Where should I start……
okay “dach” is it? Correct me if I’m wrong but didn’t those teams in ’04-’06 make the playoffs? That best record s**t means NOTHING! It doesn’t go in the history books and make it so bad TWO other teams in the east alone were behind the cavs by seven games or less BOTH years! So dont sit up here and act like they just dominated the NBA because they didnt! And compared to the west Coast in ’04-’06, and the east coast form ’08-’10. The west coast was a far better confrence! Meaning that the lakers from ’04-’06 were no better than the cavs from ’08-’10. They were both MEDIOCRE teams! Now who are you gonna name as his supporting cast? Shaq? Five years passed his prime. Mo? He is NOT a number 2 guy on any team, he was over utilized. Delonte? He is SO inconsistant! The only other reasonable player he had was JJ Hickson! And every player I named did absolutely NOTHING! in the playoffs! Prime example of this “team” youre taking up for, when Mo went down, why did LeBron have to move outta his position? Shouldn’t someone else from this “team” step up? But as always, he did it himself. These past 2 years were not team efforts, it was LeBron playing positions 1-4 with occasional help. THATS the reason they failed in the playoffs!
and jim where in the hell did i say he had a tripple-double in game 5????? come on bro dont correct me on something i never said…

  21. Devilmark - Jul 16, 2010 at 9:06 PM

Funny how people r so quick to say kobe has 5 rings the next best player to MJ. Wooooooow have ya’ll 4got dat Robert Horry has 7 dats 1 more den MJ. Bottomline is rings do make ur basketball legacy look amazing. Lebron is young n have atleast 12years left in him…….. til den let’s not be so fast to judge greatness when an individual is still n their prime!!!!!! Let’s Go Heat
P.S Bill is the king of rings!

  24. Larry - Jul 17, 2010 at 1:53 AM

To compare Point Guard Smush Parker to All Star Mo Willimas and Centers Kwame Brown and Chris Mims to Shaq and Big Z isn’t even close. Kobe had every other game Lamar.
