Celtics Ray Allen on Miami: We're still the better team

Jul 14, 2010, 9:59 AM EDT

Thumbnail image for RAllen_three.jpgThe Boston Celtics are the defending Eastern Conference champions. Miami, if you want that crown you are going to have to fight them for it.

Ray Allen — who made it official yesterday inking his deal to stay a Celtic — said he and his teammates are ready to show Miami what team basketball looks like (as reported by the Boston Herald).

“We look forward to playing (Miami),” he said. “We feel like we’re the better team – the team to beat in the East. We definitely look forward to that matchup.”

Of course, when Boston first got Allen — the same year they got Kevin Garnett also to pair with Paul Pierce and form “the big three” — it was the year they won the NBA championship. And with all due respect to Boston, the combination of LeBron James, Dwyane Wade and Chris Bosh has more raw talent.

So how is this different?

“But the question is whether they’re ready to sacrifice – make the ultimate sacrifice. It’s not about numbers. It’s not about accolades. When we did this in `07 that’s what we all knew and what we all said. It didn’t matter. The question that was posed to us was who was going to take the last shot. We all said the guy who’s open. When you go through it you get so used to it. That first year I wouldn’t say was frustrating – it was an adjustment we all had to make.”

We’ll see if the big egos in Miami are ready to do the same (they did sacrifice money, but that is different). If not, Boston will remain the better team.

I really don’t understand what the problem is here.
The celtics are the current Eastern Conference Champion.
Why shouldn’t he think that their the team to beat in
    the east?
I really don’t know why all of you hate on the celtics for one little comment. I guess we all get alittle jelous now and then because your team might have gotten beat by them at one critical point or another it’s understandabl.
Untill they get knocked out of or don’t make the playoffs they are the team to beat in the eastern confrense.

I remember when the Heat couldn’t sell out their arena for a playoff game a couple months ago. Now all these hardcore Heat fans are popping up all over the place. Let’s let them play the games before making all these bold predictions. The Lakers and Celtics are the teams to beat in both conferences until someone (maybe the Heat) shows otherwise.
And I like the comment about how this Eastern Conference is very different from 2008. The Bulls are one player away from being a championship contender. The Magic are still very much a factor. And Boston is not dead.
Miami will be very good, but let’s not go crazy.

Let’s not get too carried away now Celtics fan.

  4. Fred Sturrup - Jul 14, 2010 at 4:55 PM

The games of Lebron and Dwyane are similar. They both work their best when they have the ball most of the time. I just don’t seem them having a good court marriage.

  5. JD - Jul 14, 2010 at 5:00 PM

2nd 4peat, after the Lakers do it from 2009-2012

  6. rgd - Jul 14, 2010 at 5:21 PM

As a laker fan, I never thought I would agree with anything a Celtic would say. But I do think Boston is going to be better than the Heat.

  7. WontGetPastLakers - Jul 14, 2010 at 5:28 PM

What do you mean “…should have actually won that game?” Meaning, the Celtics should have won game 7??? Really?? Then I guess the Lakers should have won game 2, 4, and/or5? Shoulda, coulda, woulda don’t win you championships…didda does. And the Lakers didda win game 7 to win it all. If ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ were NBA nuts, then every team would be a champion.

  8. jesse - Jul 14, 2010 at 5:44 PM

Yes, Celtics are old but they know how to win championship how about those Miami’s young and talented prove it first. Remember it’s a long season.

  9. Bill-Sonora - Jul 14, 2010 at 6:32 PM

The Celtics deserve more credit than your giving them.
How can you say they are old and worn out if they were in the Finals?
    They are the Eastern Champions!
They were in Game 7 of the NBA Finals.
I cant believe you think Orlando is better. The Celtics only lost in the Finals because the LAKERS were the better team and the ONLY better team than the Celtics.
Im a LAKER FAN, and even I know that the Celtics are much better tnan Orlando.

  10. mike xin - Jul 14, 2010 at 7:10 PM

wow so much hate for a team who hasn’t played yet, on the basketball side i’m from miami and will root for miami, but i won’t come out and say who’s better and who’s not because i respect all the teams that’s on top of the east and we shall just see what the big three can do. As far as attacking the city that don’t care, yes we don’t care, i can careless about the other cities trash talks because they’re butthurt over how we manage to get all three players everyone was looking to get. And we also don’t let fat people in our clubs too, you want to talk about that also?

  11. downtown - Jul 14, 2010 at 7:19 PM

Yea. They could have easily won that game if they didn’t give away the 12 point lead they had. I don’t think you would disagree if I said the Lakers played like absolute garbage for a large portion of that game. The team everyone wrote off took your team to game 7 and almost pulled it off. Not to mention, they clobbered you in 08. The Lakers won, I am not debating that. I’ll give you credit, they played big at the end. I wouldn’t say LA is better than the Celtics at all. They played pretty even most of the series (ID 7 games). LA just got in at the end this time. They won the series, yes. But by a very slim margin. Perk got injured, that’s life. You were without Bynum for the most part. Let’s see how 2011 pans out. Maybe you can catch us in championships, maybe not.

  12. Cordae - Jul 14, 2010 at 8:08 PM

I like what I’m reading. with all this being said…..
Where does this leave Cleveland? LOL sorry..

  13. Me - Jul 14, 2010 at 8:55 PM

    well said

  14. GW - Jul 14, 2010 at 8:59 PM

What is so suprising? Most teams dont sell out unless they are really good. Just like the TD Garden was empty before 08 and now the “loyal” fans are always present. Im loving the hate that my team is getting. It will be that much better when we go down the line on the non-believers.
Before 08, Rondo was viewed as a bum and you could say that Perkins underachieved. Rondo is legit, but Perkins is still overrated. Boston’s bench in 08 was nothing to write home about but two years later writers have made them this great supporting cast when they werent. House, Powe, and Posey arent better than Heats bench which is improving. Boston is too old to hang. If Ray wants to talk thats fine. When you are as old as he is you need motivation. For all the talk about how great Boston is, they have won the same amount of championships that Miami has in the past 5 years.

  15. Hoops McCann - Jul 14, 2010 at 8:59 PM

Downtown – The Lakers didn’t play like absolute garbage in game 7. They SHOT terribly for much of the game but actually played very well in every other area. The Celtics didn’t GIVE AWAY a 12 point lead. They led by 12 after outplaying (outshooting) the Lakers for 28 minutes, and then the Lakers outplayed them for the last 20 minutes of the game. To both teams credit it was the greatest all out effort I’ve seen from two teams in a very long time. Very worthy of their great and storied rivalry. The Celtics did have a very good chance to win game 7, but that doesn’t mean they should have won. The amount of energy they expended the first 3 quarters left them completely out of gas in the fourth. It was really obvious. That said, I hope the Celtics beat up Miami, but I’m not putting any money on it!

  16. LOLtoAllHaters - Jul 14, 2010 at 9:01 PM

I love hearing from all the haters. First of all, the show the heat put on friday was for the Miami fans, not all you haters out there. The only reason it was on National TV, was because ESPN had to snoop in for a few brief minutes. If it was your team they went to, you would be loving it. So SHUT THE F___K up you all haters. Get over the fact they didnt go to your team. Cant wait til the season starts. Gonna be some disappointed people out there. The only team that will match up with the Heat in the east will be Orlando. Pay Riley knows what he’s doing. All you haters of no clue. My money is on him and his knew friends.

  17. Da Real - Jul 14, 2010 at 11:00 PM

With the Celts big three you had a shooter, a scorer, and a legitimate big man. This is good balance of skills.
With the Heat you have a scorer, a scorer, and a small big man scorer. I don’t see any balance here.
One is built around the basics of basketball. Each player fills a cog so you have as many options as possible. The other team is built using 3 scorers with skill sets that don’t greatly differentiate from one another and thus might not compliment each other.
It appears to me that the Heat will have to run a ton. You really can’t fear a half court offense with no big man and no shooter to maintain spacing. I would pack the middle and say shoot it guys, just like other countries did to the poorly balanced US olympic teams that we had going there for a while.

  18. Tony - Jul 14, 2010 at 11:24 PM

Wade and LeBron are also two of the best passers and defenders in the league, they will run Boston silly!

  19. aaron - Jul 15, 2010 at 12:42 AM

I love seeing all these new Heat fans. Probably 70-80% of the Heat’s fans probably didnt go to or watch a Heat game all last season. All bandwagon fans just because they will be good now. There is nothing I hate more than a bandwagon fan which is what most of the Heat fans are. They’ll deny it of course every time but the rest of us not living in Miami will know the truth.
    TO: Makeme-from Detroit.
Normally I never say anything to start a fight online because its just stupid but I’ll make an exception.
You are an idiot. Your an obvious bandwagoner and have no idea what your talking about. Are you watching their practices? They’ve been together a week you moron, all us non-miami fans know something like that doesn’t happen overnight. They just recently got a starting lineup and now Chalmers is out for 4 weeks. I bet you’re best friends with LeBron, Wade, and Bosh huh? If there are any true Miami fans out there, (before Bosh and LeBron came,) you guys should tell all these new Miami fans to S T F U, they are making all if any true Miami fans look awful.

  20. DK - Jul 15, 2010 at 12:49 AM

You are actually reenforcing the fact that Lebron can’t win till the time you have Kobe,Gasol with lakers and big 3 are playing for Boston and so on. I would expect the so called best team to battle and defeat the best teams in playoffs and not pray for retirement of best players from other teams.

  21. Josh - Jul 15, 2010 at 1:02 AM

The owners and the league themselves created all this hype — all these teams that cut salary and players for three years to get ready for “the class”, the big free agency scenario with Lebron, Wade and Bosh. That they all went to Miami, together… it just irks Chicago, Cleveland, NJ and NY fans to the utmost. Trying to say that Miami will be terrible after this incredible coup is just plain jealousy. Face it: Miami got all three of the “once in a lifetime” free agents, they scored big time. Of course it isn’t automatic for them to win titles now, but they for sure will have a nice team.

  22. Hoops0801 - Jul 15, 2010 at 9:33 AM

DOES ANYONE REMEMBER the HUGE party the Celtics put on for Ray Allen, Paul Pierce and Kevin Garnett?????? Doesnt anyone remember the hoop-la that went on for days….and days….and days……the interviews, the parties, the autograph parties………THIS ALL HAPPENED….but it was not OVER REPORTED by the media because all of these guys were in the league for years and years. The media is the one to blame for all of the LeBron stuff…if they just would have shut up for the past two years and stop putting a microphone in LeBrons face for two years asking where he was going to go – no one would have cared….(as much) Boston…..had no one – Paul Pierce thats it…..and then they got Ray and Kevin…so WHY IS MIAMI BEING HATED SO MUCH because of who they got. THEY ALL MADE THE DECISION TO GO TO THE HEAT……for less money…..Look at Raja Bell…..could have gone to the Lakers and possibly won a ring…BUT NO – he went for the money! Everyone needs to just CHILL OUT…wait for the season and then if the Heat “choke” – then do all of the TEAM BASHING….but for goodness sake……spit out the sour grapes…..move on……and just let the games begin!!!

  23. Joe_mama - Jul 15, 2010 at 12:33 PM

MIA is going to destroy every team in the NBA. Let the dust settle people. Lakers who?? Let’s see who remembers LA from 2010-2020….LOL!

  24. D-STROI - Jul 15, 2010 at 12:34 PM

@SPORTSHEROES: Please tell me you weren’t referring to Tony Allen being the better out of the “Allens” and the best off of their bench. I dont know if your from New England like me but, i have seen every game played last season and the seasons before that with Tony Allen there and every time that dude touched the ball i got nervous. He has no handles, he decisions on the court are suspect and this is the same bonehead who blew his knee out after attempting a dunk 30 seconds after the play was dead a few seasons ago. He was only on the team for defensive purposes and many times a streaky player. Dont tell me that Tony Allen is better than the future hall of famer Ray Allen or even Glen Davis off the bench. Better than Scalabrine maybe, but not others. I also find it funny how you can sit there and bag on the Celtics “old team” when they only lost by 4 points in the last game of the finals and a team that shouldnt have made it past the Cavs to boot. Unless your a Lakers fan, then what team do you like that didnt even make it to the Finals? and @ Neal, whats your point? your Lakers with the #1 player in the world barely beat the “old Celtics”. to me, the lakers are paper champions almost like when apollo beat rocky in the first movie. Apollo won by decision but still lost the fight. go back to all of those games and you will see that the Lakers and the REFS beat the C’s. This is what the league wanted for better ratings and more money. and you can call me a boston head and bias but, if Perkins was in that game they might have won by 4 points

  25. Jimee Johnnson - Jul 15, 2010 at 12:49 PM

The Celtics “big three” are like Grandpas! Pierce and Garnett are not the players they once were, and Ray Allen proved he is not even close to clutch. Rondo cannot shoot free throws to save his life, and Perkins is an offensive wimp! The Celtics overachieved in the playoffs, but are about to get a taste of their own medicine, especially against Miami. LeBron and DWade are elite defenders, and Bosch is no slouch. Miami, not the old age home Celtics, is the team to beat in the East. Sorry, Orlando and Chicago: you guys certainly get an honorable mention.
