Juwan Howard about to join Heat

Jul 13, 2010, 1:05 PM EDT

Thumbnail image for Heat_logo.gifThis is the kind of pickup we’ve been expecting from the Heat.

Veteran — and we really mean veteran: 16 seasons and age 37 — forward Juwan Howard is closing in on a deal to join the Miami Heat, according to Ira Winderman writing for the Sun Sentinel.

“Juwan wants to get a ring and he has great respect for Coach Riley,” agent David Falk told the Sun Sentinel Tuesday “We’ve talked to the Heat. There’s a mutual interest. That’s all I feel comfortable saying at this point.”

You can’t run Howard out there long minutes, but last year in a limited role he was fine. He played about 22 minutes a game for the Blazers last season, giving them 6 points (shooting 50 percent) and 4.6 rebounds per game. He’s not anywhere near his peak, but in a limited role in a forward rotation with Chris Bosh and Udonis Haslem could give the Heat some useful minutes.

Terms of the deal still being hammered out, but this will be for the veterans’ minimum.

maybe they should call jalen rose and chris webber out of retirement and get eddie house or nate robinson and shaq.

  2. hnirobert - Jul 13, 2010 at 2:06 PM

Nice signing. There’s another 5-6 fouls that’ll put Dwight Howard on the line.

  3. steve97 - Jul 13, 2010 at 2:06 PM

get raja bell and carlos arroyo from fiu also

  4. ron - Jul 13, 2010 at 2:09 PM

i heard, barkly, malone and reggie miller are available and would like to win a championship, and they said they will pay the heat min. salary to play. what a joke.

  5. Mike - Jul 13, 2010 at 2:24 PM

Wow. The Heat even got more stacked. The Lakers still have the edge but based on paper they surpassed both Orlando and Boston.

  6. J.G - Jul 13, 2010 at 2:31 PM

Raja is going to L.A to kiss Kobe’s a**, Shaq is not welcome in Miami, Maybe Zydrunas Ilgauskas comes down here, I really will like to get A.I , this could be his best chance to win a tittle.Im sure we will be fine down here, we wont need that many rebounds ( the big three all could rebound plus they dont miss that much so there wont be a need to rebound )

  7. steve97 - Jul 13, 2010 at 2:41 PM

get a.i. he can still shoot—-he doesn’t have to be the guy anymore……………….

  8. hnirobert - Jul 13, 2010 at 2:46 PM

A.I. and what Pat expects from his players will not mesh. Why does everyone think they need a PG when they have Wade and LBJ who will be handling the ball more often than not.

  9. Mike D. - Jul 13, 2010 at 2:54 PM

The Heat will be good but they have to gel as a team together first. This could take 2-3 years before they win a championship. By then, Kobe Bryant will be way past his prime, and the Heat can cash in their tokens.

No doubt that group would kick the butts of your team dude. Same reply to the other lame comment that follows about Reggie, Malone and Barkley. You both must have really crap teams and your jealousy is showing big time.

  11. DudeDad - Jul 13, 2010 at 2:57 PM

Too bad Manute Bol passed away…he would have completed the circus in Miami.
(side note…to post, you have to type two words displayed…one was “Waded”…the past tense of Wade…perhaps a sign that this will be a three-year disappointment in South Beach…Lebron will be in NJ then, but no prime-time TV show this time…)

  12. ron - Jul 13, 2010 at 3:17 PM

hey cire. i have been living in la for 30 years, trust me my team does not suck. i have witnessed 11 championships. i am a realist and miami is not going to win. i think it is very funny. nothing to be jealou about. i have king kobe, i dont need queen lebron.if this doesnt work out for him, maybe he can go to europe and win a title for italy or serbania.

  13. Hammer - Jul 13, 2010 at 3:20 PM

He’s still playing? He started in the NBA during the Bush administration….THE FIRST BUSH ADMINISTRATION!! Cell phones
werent around then! Good luck Miami with that “talented” bench.

  14. steve - Jul 13, 2010 at 3:27 PM

to steve97. it is not about him having to be the guy anymore. in his mind he has to be the guy.

  15. deno - Jul 13, 2010 at 4:14 PM

the miami heat are quickly becoming the washington redskins of the NBA and you know what happened there. just too many egos involved here. lebron, I PITY THE FOOL.

  16. matt broad - Jul 13, 2010 at 4:24 PM

They should sign Arinze Onawaku – Syracuse guy – big body, great rebounder – space eater.

  17. David - Jul 13, 2010 at 4:31 PM

Hey . . . Ease off Coach Riley . . . He is a bright coach and is
simply trying to put together a team that can get to the finals.

  18. DudeDad - Jul 13, 2010 at 4:32 PM

Deno – As a Redskins fan, I can say it is different…it was the ego of the owner, not the players, that has ruined the franchise. Here, the result will be a bit different…the Heat will be somewhat entertaining to watch, and they will win their fair share of games…but with 3 huge egos, 1 ball on the court at a time, no center, no bench and no depth, they will not likely win a championship anytime soon…Lebron will be in a Knicks or Nets Jersey after 3 years….

  19. Devonal - Jul 13, 2010 at 4:37 PM

Maybe they can entice Steve Kerr to come out of retirement just to shoot 3’s… will this horrible crap that is the Miami Heat ever stop? Seriously… I’m getting sick every time I surf the web and every other headline is Miami Heat…LeJackass that…
GO AWAY LEJERK… no1 likes you anymore!!!
Kobe’s awesome (and this is coming from a Bulls fan)!!!!

  20. Andy - Jul 13, 2010 at 4:54 PM

Why dont the Heat suit up Alonzo Mourning?? lol

  21. M12071941 - Jul 13, 2010 at 5:05 PM

Watching the Heat attempt to build a team around 3 guys with nothing but pocket lint left to spend is almost as entertaining as the ridiculous hype that started this circus.

  22. ELS - Jul 13, 2010 at 5:15 PM

Florida should bring back T-mac. But not to Orlando, to Miami baby!

  23. sunnycali - Jul 13, 2010 at 6:29 PM

There’s a bunch of available players. There’s Starbury, “The Glove Payton.” These guys will play for cheap. A.I. is always ready for “PRACTICE.PRACTICE.PRACTICE.PRACTICE.” and did I say “PRACTICE.”

  24. letsgocavs - Jul 13, 2010 at 8:31 PM

umm I am going on a limb here. Thinking they will win maybe 1 championship but it will not be in the next 2 years or so.

  25. James P - Jul 13, 2010 at 10:04 PM

I am from Ohio and I am a Cav supporter. What I don’t understand is why are people hating on the Heat. They are going to be good from the start. They are odds on favorite to win it all and if every one took the time to get thier heads out thier @!#$@^% they would realize what they have. LA has an excellent team but right now DWade, LeBron and bosh are way better than Kobe, Paul, and Artest no doubt about it. Imagine Kobe coming down court with dwade on him and Lebron comes over and trap him Kobe will have a fit. Imagine kobe Mr. stopper deciding to stop Dwade whos going to stop lebron, Artest, I dont think so. Chris Bosh owns gasol. The rest will work out Z and Miller and company their coming will dominate this season. They will gel right when they are suppose to. SO QUIT HATING AND CONGRATULATE!
