LeBron on Gilbert's comments: "I absolutely know I made the right decision"

Jul 10, 2010, 11:47 AM EDT

Man, is this going to get awkward.

At the press-conference… and I use that term loosely, to introduce LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, and Chris Bosh as the new Heat triumvirate yesterday, LeBron reacted to Gilbert’s diatribe comments in his letter to the fans of Cleveland (and subsequent interviews).

Courtesy of Heat blog Peninsula is Mightier on the scene (audio here):

“And to also hear my former owners’ comments, I absolutely know I made the right decision.”

Well, then.

This is an ugly, messy situation in which neither side is making things any easier. Gilbert’s ruining his respectability and looks petty and small, LeBron looks petty for responding to it. Wade has said he feels terrible for what he did to Cleveland, but at the same time, as long as he keeps making any statement or movement that drives the dagger deeper, those comments will be overridden. .

And so it goes. No amicable split, no chance of a future reunion. No quarter given, none taken.

And the people that really suffer from all this, the fans of the Cavs, get to wake every day with the latest reminder of what they consider is the biggest betrayal of all.

Matt, you make it sound as if you are condemning LeBron for making a decision he had the right to make.
He was a FREE agent. Had he chose to remain in Cleveland or gone to Chicago or heaven forbid, to the damn Knicks, it was in his right to do so.

Dan Gilbert personally guarantees a Cavaliers championship BEFORE Lebron wins one with the heat! Folks: if you believe that, you are chumps, too! Hey Dan: maybe you are talking about winning the championship of SORE LOSERS. Danny boy: you certainly are an arrogant fool making idiotic predictions that will NEVER happen. Maybe you can convince Kobe to come to Ohio…maybe not!

Isn’t there a war going on? And something about an oil spill filling the ocean?
Perhaps that stuff got boring for the media and they decided to get involved in this reality TV business.
    ok.. back to my life.

As a native of South Florida, Gilbert picked the wrong place to be putting voodoo curses on. We’ll see you curse and raise it ten fold. CHANGO CHANGO CHANGO!

… is there any chance that LeBron would consider playing for Rich Rod and the Wolverines this year? Go Blue… we don’t give a damn for the whole state of Ohio….

thank god for Dan Gilbert’s comments, as a CAVS fan, I went to bed happy that night we had an owner who cares, and knowing him a little bit, don’t be too shocked if he doesn’t come through on his guarantee

The issue is how he left in my oppinion. Put aside the fans of Cleveland feel slighted. He made a production out of the situation on a National cable network.
How would you feel if your spouse took out a full page ad in the local paper to let everyone know she is leaving you! It would STING!

This is a basketball blog, folks. Why would you want these writers commenting on BP? And, if you wanted news on that, why read a sports blog in the first place?

You are so right. We should dress in sack cloth, whip ourselves, forsake all fun and enjoyment, fast and abstinence should rule.

just sayin’ — there are more important things in life than
    a self-important over-paid athlete 😐

  15. Anonymous - Jul 10, 2010 at 2:14 PM

Umm because you’re on a BASKETBALL blog – don’t like it? Don’t read it and don’t come here. What else do you expect to see here?
Who ever said that any of this compares to what’s happening in the real world? Get off your high horse, it just makes you look like a rediculous fool.

When I was back in High School years, and years and years ago. I had the opportunity to make and play on a County All Star team. We played and All Star team from another county. It was exciting to play on a team with guys who could do some wonderful things. I actually liked going to practice and seeing what would happen and who could do what and I ended up discovering that I could do stuff that without those guys around me I would not even imagine myself doing. Imagine the pure exhiliration that must be ripping through the hearts and minds of Lebron, Dwayne, Chris’ mind right now. Three never say die hearts like that beating as one. I just cannot wait for the season to kick off and I’ll bet you ten to one that Andrew Bynum and Kobe and Pau are on the phone and in the weight room as we speak. The three young thundercats is talking trash and laying down one heck of a guantlet…. This is sports competition there will be a definite thrill in the victory and a real agony to defeat experienced in the 2011 NBA Championship series.
Dan Gilbert is a money whore, plain and simple. Lebron walked away from a definite 30 million dollars because the Cavaliers and Dan Gilbert are losers and always will be. The inverse of his whining about Lebron leaving translates the fact that without Lebron they all know that they will not be winning anything in their respective life times. When Lebron and the minions faced and lost to the Orlando Team with Dwight, Turc, and Rashad the three against one point was made in his mind. This year when Paul, Ray and Kevin blasted the hapless and hopeless Cav’s in yet another three against one debacle Lebron, would have to have been an idiot if he couldn’t figure out that he needed to play along side another definite scorer to win more than a few games. Two being better than one is fundamental.
Did Dan Gilbert introduce Lebron’s Mother to Lebron’s father and somehow ensure that they would get together at the particular moment that Lebron was conceived. The real underlying implication here is that somehow Dan the money whore has convinced himself that he owned Lebron’s mother and father and that he therefore owns Lebron. Well Danny you vindictive decrepit foolish man Lebron’s name is not Tobey and you do not own a plantation. What an absolutely arrogant Creep.

so what? should we limit our interests to only the things that are considered “more important?

  18. Tony - Jul 10, 2010 at 2:18 PM

No, you are right. I did not like the whole showbiz routine he put on. Just decide and that is it.

  19. Speedle - Jul 10, 2010 at 2:19 PM

Does this mean we’ll see these three media whores guest starring on “Burn Notice” or “CSI:Miami” anytime soon?

  20. happyfella_007 - Jul 10, 2010 at 2:24 PM

Dan Gilbert certainly should have cooled off before he reacted publicly but Lebron’s “Decision” on TV was very provocative and delivered in a reprehensible manner.

  21. zaglossus - Jul 10, 2010 at 2:24 PM

Move on, folks. The only things really bad about this were (1) the bloated spectacle of the ESPN “The Decision” show; (2) increased team disparity in the NBA – the number of teams that have a chance at winning the title just went sharply down; (3) and the egregious tirade of the Cav’s owner; (4) and, of course, poor Cleveland.
And even if LeBron wins championships now his legacy is a bit tarnished because he needs some Dream Team help to win it all. And really, Miami is not a city that most other sports fans care about.

  22. soundguy - Jul 10, 2010 at 2:26 PM

They couldn’t win WITH LeBron, how the heck are they gonna do it WITHOUT LeBron? Dan Gilbert is a baby that lost one of his toys and it was HIS fault! Free agency means just that…FREE AGENCY. Free to sign with any team that makes the right offer. Gilbert probably thinks his money will buy anything but he’s wrong! LeBron joined Chris and Dwayne because he wants a ring and knows he can’t get it in Cleveland with a loser owner like Gilbert! Gilbert is a little baby and acting like it! Man up, Gilbert and grow some balls.

  23. xavi - Jul 10, 2010 at 2:31 PM

sports blog, take your RL complaints somewhere else

  24. happyfella_007 - Jul 10, 2010 at 2:32 PM

Tommy, Dan Gilbert reacted very poorly. He should have cooled off before he went public with his thoughts. But you are pretty hard on him. Lebron’s televised “Decision” was in poor taste and provocative.

  25. Michorizo - Jul 10, 2010 at 2:38 PM

LeBron should run for President so all those things you mentioned can be taken care of.
