Heat looking at Juwan Howard in attempt to add speed bump

Jul 10, 2010, 4:14 PM EDT

Juwan Howard needs to chill out.

But instead, he could be heating up.

That was a terrible pun. I apologize. It’s been a long week.

Yahoo! Sports is reporting that the mega-team Heat could sign the 37-year old big man to play alongside Dwyane Wade, Chris Bosh, and LeBron James. The Heat badly need a center and Howard could be willing to play for the minimum. Howard played admirably for the Blazers last year when every single center they had went down before they added Marcus Camby, and certainly brings a veteran mindset.

But against players like Dwight Howard, Andrew Bynum, Yao Ming, even Kendrick Perkins, you have to wonder how effective Howard can be at this point. He’s still in good shape, but, he’s 37. He’s pre-dates Disco.

Still, for a team looking to fill 8 roster spots on a limited budget, Howard could be a solid answer.  Still needs to chill out, though.

Talk about the realization and desperation the heat now find themselves in with NO big man what so ever; they will be completely dominated on the boards and in the paint. It takes five guys at a minimum to win a championship!!

    Umm…
Juwan Howard didn’t even play center when he was in his prime during his Bullets/Wizards days. How in the world can you even call him a “big man?” He’s smaller than Lebron James.
I understand that rumors have flown around that Bosh doesn’t want to play center. But that doesn’t mean the Heat can put Juwan Howard there.
I don’t even get why Bosh would be opposed to playing center. Besides Dwight Howard, Shaq, and Kendrick Perkins… there’s nobody Bosh really has to worry about overpowering him. He’s got amazing height and increible length in his arms. He can defend pretty much any center in the league.

desperation is signing travis outlaw. desperation is throwing money at kyle korver and jj redick. desperation is the cavs looking at josh childress. the heat just need to acquire bigger bodies to take up space and have fouls to give and they’ll be fine. other than dwight howard there is NO OTHER DOMINATING CENTER in the league. shaq is old and fat, perkins will be out until decemberish, andrew bynum has one leg and yao ming is coming off a serious injury. stop reading the sports guy.

if juwan howard works out, they will more than likely add him to udonis haslem, jamaal magloire and joel anthony, in addition to the two big men they picked up in the 2nd round.
pat riley just pulled off one of the greatest free agency moves in league history and people are still questioning him?

I am sure the Lakers will be delighted if the Heat pretend Howard is a center and settle for him. I would be delighted. Cleveland would be delighted. LeBron’s ex-boss would be delighted, since then there would be a chance that Cleveland might actually win the NBA before Miami.
