Chicago is your free agency loser – but they could still be better than Miami

Jul 7, 2010, 5:55 PM EDT

Thumbnail image for rose and noah game 5.pngUPDATE: 6:04 PM: Part one of the plan is coming together — the Bulls have an agreement with Carlos Boozer.

Now, either LeBron changes his mind and comes to town, and they are instantly right there with the Lakers; or he doesn’t, they get a shooter like Allen or Redick, and they are still right near the top of the East. Things are still good in Bulls land.

2:22 pm: Next season, the Chicago Bulls are still going to be a good team.

Today, they feel like the losers in free agency. The team that cleared out cap space — trading away Kirk Hinrich to have space to sign almost two max free agents — yet they are coming away with none of the big three. Dwyane Wade said it was close, but that when Chris Bosh agreed to Miami he realized the two needed to pair up.

Harsh. But not the end of the world.

In fact, the Bulls could be better than the Heat next year.

The Bulls have two quality young players in Derrick Rose and Joakim Noah — they are essentially a poor man’s Bosh and Wade. And they are not that far behind. And they are improving.

But Bosh and Wade are not going to have much around them. Right now the Heat roster consists of Mario Chalmers and Michael Beasley, and the Heat have spent all summer trying to move Beasley but nobody will take him on.

The Heat must to build a team from scratch, basically. Maybe they get Brandon Haywood and Udonis Haslem and a nice point guard. But there will not be much depth. It will be a two man show.

The Bulls, on the other hand, have a lot cap space and maybe could sign Carlos Boozer (and not just to lure LeBron). Chicago has already started negotiating with him. Then all they’d really lack is a sharpshooter — like free agents JJ Redick and Ray Allen.

Picture that roster: Rose, Redick, Luol Deng, Boozer and Noah. Taj Gibson is the first guy off the bench.

That is a good team. One that would be better than Miami this year. Maybe even better than where LeBron lands.

Everyone is grading the Miami Heat based on what their current roster is. Do you really think Pat Riley is done? He just started. Bosh and Wade is the beginning. Watch.

  2. Armen Dacity - Jul 7, 2010 at 2:42 PM

Rose/Noah is like Wade/Bosh? On what planet?

  3. Joe - Jul 7, 2010 at 2:49 PM

Wade and Bosh is lightyears ahead of Rose and Noah. How can you even say they “are not that far behind”. By the time Miami is done trading Beasley and spending the rest of the FA cash, they are gonna have a group consisting of something along the lines of Felton/Wade/Mason/Bosh/Haywood with guys like Dooling and Bell off the bench.
That’s leaps and bounds better then Rose/Reddick/Deng/Boozer/Noah.

  4. Alex - Jul 7, 2010 at 2:50 PM

This is what I’ve been saying. Miami better hope Riley has something up his sleeve because now they have to build a team with only like 10 mil. Chicago on the other hand has a roster ready to go. Bosh/Wade made a big mistake and they’ll realize that next season when the Bulls beat them.

  5. hnirobert - Jul 7, 2010 at 2:55 PM

Alex, didn’t Wade singlehandedly beat the Bulls 3 times out of 4 last year? With a bunch of scrubs? Didn’t he? Don’t be upset that your team is the ugly girl that’s getting dumped by everyone else.

  6. Baboso from the west - Jul 7, 2010 at 2:57 PM

whatever the Heat does it won’t matter…Magic and Celtics are still the best team(s) in the east.

  7. Dr.3000 - Jul 7, 2010 at 2:59 PM

Is this post supposed to make all the butt-hurt bulls fans feel better? when all is said and done, Miami will be competing for championships and the bulls will be struggling for a playoff spot.

  8. Slick - Jul 7, 2010 at 3:03 PM

Are you guys kidding me with this article. Does anyone remember this past years playoffs. The only reason the bulls even made it was because Bosh broke his nose or else Raptors would have made it in and not the Buls.Boy do some people have selective memory or what? The HEAT with the roster they had finished with a better record than the bulls. I can’t wait for 5pm to come around so u can all drink away this madness( or should i say sadness)

  9. Joe - Jul 7, 2010 at 3:05 PM

No to mention, the Heat were the 5th seed last year with Wade, Haslem and O’Neal and Chicago was 8th seed with Rose, Noah, Hienrich, Deng and Miller. You don’t think Bosh plus a couple more pieces is a much bigger upgrade then swapping Hienrich and Miller for Boozer and Reddick?

  10. Alex - Jul 7, 2010 at 3:07 PM

You mean the Bulls without their starting 5 intact, a terrible coach, and a roster full of expiring contracts that we took on for this summer? Yea he beat that team. Will he beat the team that we put on the floor this season? No.
What you’re about to witness in Miami is the biggest group of bandwagon fans in the history of the NBA. Even more than the Lakers and Celtics. Why Wade and Bosh would want to play for a team that ranks at the bottom of the league in attendance doesn’t make sense, Miami is a terrible sports town. Does anyone even own a HEAT jersey in the US or they just donated to third world countries? Honestly the only people I’ve seen in HEAT jerseys are guerilla soldiers in Africa and the players themselves.

  11. Joe - Jul 7, 2010 at 3:13 PM

^^You act like the Heat didn’t have a roster full oof nobodies and expiring contracts geared towards this offseason. The difference is the Heat is actually signing people. Oh and cheap shots at a teams fanbase. Clear sign of jealousy.

  12. ken - Jul 7, 2010 at 3:22 PM

If the Bulls dont land Lebron or Boozer, I think both should go after Beasley…WHY NOT!!! Believe me Beasley will be a Beast for sure…wait and see!!!

  13. Ben - Jul 7, 2010 at 3:24 PM

This is just an article to hide the simple truth that CHI LOST in free agency. Don’t try to sugarcoat it! In no universe is Rose/Noah better than Wade/Bosh, and after Riley is done with the roster, there is no way CHI is better than MIA!!!

Do you even remember the playoff race? The Bulls were ahead of the HEAT until we got obliterated by injuries, at times playing with only 1 of our starting 5 (the rook Gibson) and dropped down to the 8th, and STILL managed to make the playoffs on Rose’s shoulders, the second-year 22 year old all-star. The Bulls are gonna be fine, no scratch that, better than fine.
You act like the Bulls aren’t going to be better than last season, we still have 30 mil in cap space and our rosters core intact (Rose, Noah, Deng, Gibson, and Johnson) as a HEAT fan you probably didn’t watch many Bulls games so you don’t realize how awesome that core is. Rose and Noah rolled on the Cavs in the post season, the so-called best team in the league. Now we can use our cap space to sign quality guys around them. Wade is sick, no doubt. And Bosh is a great number 2 option, of course. But you don’t have the necessary tools to build around them. Maybe in a couple years but in that time the Bulls will have leap-frogged Miami.
And those aren’t cheap shots just facts.

  17. Mike Hunt - Jul 7, 2010 at 4:06 PM

Bull’s are left in NBA no man’s land. Joakim Noah is another dope arrest away from NBA suspension. Carlos Boozer is hugely overrated and soon will be hugely overpaid. Ditto David Lee.
John Paxson has had a very, very, very bad week. I imagine he resigns.

  18. Slick - Jul 7, 2010 at 4:22 PM

yeah you have Noah and Rose and 30 mil but the players are starting to disappear at least the ones that matter. Hurry and grab someone, anyone ChiTown…lol Love the hate and make room for the bandwagon. I’ve been a HEAT since inception so bring the noise it’s our time to shine!!! LETS GO HEAT!!

  19. Lee - Jul 7, 2010 at 4:54 PM

Yeah, the Bulls aren’t getting any of the big 3, but there’s more out there than that. With 30 million they’ll probably overpay for someone, but they will be a better team this year than they were last year. Whether it’s Boozer, Lee, Reddick, Mike Miller, Anthony Morrow, Ray Allen or another, there are still plenty of other players out there that will make them better. With 30 million to spend they’ll get theirs and will have more depth and overall talent than just about any team in the East, including the Heat, Cavs and Atlanta. Wade, Bosh and around 12 million to spend won’t get you much.

  20. JJ - Jul 7, 2010 at 5:28 PM

I love how bulls fans try to talk crap about the heat having a horrible fan base. What does that have to do with the actual team losers? LOL envy. Theres too much to do here so naturally people wont attend many basketball games. But its fine if that makes you feel better when your team is watching the playoffs.

  21. Anonymous - Jul 7, 2010 at 5:50 PM

As a Miami Heat fan, I can tell you watching Bulls fans eat it over this is hilarious! It’s really the only reason to even read this rag. Wait till we get LBJ!! Hey Bulls fans, enjoy getting stomped for the next 5-6 years! BWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!!!!!!

  22. Alex - Jul 7, 2010 at 5:51 PM

OK heat fans keep talking big. You act like Bosh is MJ, like I said before hes a great number two but you team needs A TON of work to even be a complete team, let alone a true contender. Compare that with the Bulls who just reached an agreement with Boozer. Compare what each team has, and the money left over to build with. Chicago is looking pretty damn good now, huh? And lol “theres too much to do here.” Like theres nothing going on in Chicago, New York or LA (all teams that rank in the top 10). GO BULLS

  23. Christina - Jul 7, 2010 at 5:59 PM

    Chicago > Miami for everything.

  24. Christina - Jul 7, 2010 at 6:03 PM

DA BULLS! Miami sucks and you aren’t getting the King. Don’t be jealous because we are known worldwide for the Bulls. Nobody cares about Miami and you will lose this year. and forever. you only have 1 championship in the last, what, century? HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHHAHAHAHAHAAHAHAHAH.
    GO HAWKS TOO!

  25. lebronsnewhome - Jul 7, 2010 at 6:21 PM

LBJ transferred property taxes to a house in Chicago today.
